Mixed Comps - why do women get 2 extra strokes?

Hi,

Playing a fun mixed team comp on Saturday. Comp rules say women get two strokes added to their handicap.

Anyone know why? Is this the norm or just at my club?

i sure this has been carefully calculated but my curiosity requires the reason why.

In mixed comps it is often to do with the difference in SSS between the ladies and gents cards, and if the score is counted off the gents card with a lower par an adjustment is made. Different for each course.

Often wondered this myself, quite a few of the ladies at our club are bloody good and I can barely afford to give 2 shots away at the best of times !...

Sometimes works the other way and the gents get extra shots...all depends on the difference between par and SSS for the gents and ladies cards.

To figure it out properly you need to know the precise scoring method to be used as well as the SSS ( and maybe par) of the Ladies and Gents cards.

Which course do you play at Ken ?

So in say a normal stableford comp, 35 points would be playing to handicap for both sexes when they score using their own cards.

If for some reason in this particular comp the ladies are scored against the gents card they would need one extra stroke to equalise with the gents since the SSS they have used to get their handicap is one more.

Similarly in a strokplay comp I think they would get one extra stroke to balance out the difference in SSS.

Not sure what the scoring format is to justify 2 extra strokes.

Could the gents be playing off Non-medal tees with a different SSS for this winter competition?

Is the competition being marked off the men's stroke indexes and pars for everyone? Therefore the women need the 2 extras?
