A couple of years ago I had the mother of all headaches, it was an odd experience. I have had headaches before but nowt like this. It lasted about four hours.
got up this morning and felt fine, drove over to a pals house about 20 mins ago and felt my vision was ,not right". Felt light headed and very similar to a couple of years ago. After an hour or so I said to me pal " I have a throbbing headache and am off home". Got home and I had an absolute banging headache. Aching neck, felt sick, the dogs barking and squeaking door were driving me barmy. At 12.00 I hit the sack, at 3.45 I was up and felt shattered. When I put my head on the pillow I thougt I had put it on a grenade. Paracetamol and ibuprofen were the order of the day.
just had a look on Wikipedia and it seems I have developed a fondness for Migraines And it seems like I have got off quite lightly. It also said that at one time the well educated seemed to suffer from them. Really.

seems there is an exception to the rule then Tashy.:whistle:
 
Stay off the Internet and get some human advice. If it is a migraine it can be triggered for a number of reasons, some you might be able to avoid or control - mine can be triggered by carrots and fresh ground coffee believe it or not. It may also be something else.

First thing my Doc always asks if I go and see her "You haven't Googled it have you".

Norrin ain't that the truth, thickest can suffer with them now.

old skier, you are deffo right re the Google thing, I had a feeling I had a migraine or two but just had a look to confirm. The aura part of the process is summat I will take notice of coz to be honest i should of got to bed earlier. Had a natter with Nursey Missis T to see what I had to eat yesterday to see if I had owt differant. Cannot put my finger on owt though.
 
I do get a migraine attack about every other month or so. It can last for up to three days. I can battle the pain with Aspirin (for me that works much better than Ibuprofen ... Paracetamol does not work at all), but I have to take it early, before my digestive system goes into shutdown. There is a special Aspirin migraine version availabe, which works a bit better even when I take it late (through the combination with some salts it can somehow dissolve into the bloodstream without having to pass through the stomach, I think). Sometimes a coke or other caffeinated sugary softdrink can bring some short term relief as well. But the pain is not the only thing ... as I said, digestive system on strike, so I normally don't feel like eating much and do feel a bit sick overall. Also my eyesight gets blurry. I even saw an aura on a few occasions (like a coloured lightning flash that stays in the field of vision the hole time ... even when you close your eyes. Scared the hell out of me when it happened the first time.) Apart from numbing the pain with medication, there is really not much I can do except wait for it to pass.

As for the triggers, a friend of mine, who is a doctor, told me that more recent research shows that some of the foods normally seen as potential triggers (like soft cheese or red wine, for example) are not really triggering the attack. Quite the contrary, they might contain substances that the body craves because the migraine has already started to build up and which we therefore often consume before the actual attack happens. I have not noticed any connection with food or drink I consume before an attack, though. I think my migraines are directly connected to my hormonal cycle, they almost always happen a few days before or during my period.
 
It used to be food and/or sudden unexpected bright light with me.

I would have severe attacks about four times a year so, quite lucky really compared to some. I don't get them any more.
My triggers were citrus fruit, dark chocolate, strong cheese and strong coffee. Often wondered if it was combinations of food.
I still avoid citrus/chocolate.
 
HID has suffered bad migraines for years. She's got some tablets to take at the onset which is suppose to limit the effects of the attack. There are some definite triggers for her including cheese and chocolate but it took a lot of help from the GP to get to the reasons and find the best things to take to minimise the migraine
 
Flippin cheese and chocolate could be triggers, just my flippin luck.

Why could it not be sprouts and celery.

Seriously though mate, get to the doctors for a check up.
The missus had quite an episode about 11 years ago and thankfully (fingers crossed) she's ok now, but the moral of the story is don't pi$$ about when it comes to matters of the head, go and see the experts.
 
Another sufferer here.

I spent quite a while going to the docs over a period of a few years, trying different tablets - both preventative and as a cure. Thankfully we've finally found one that works reasonably well, called Sumatriptan.

The best tablets I ever found over the counter was called Syndol. From what I've heard it had an ingredient that was a muscle relaxant, and it really helped with the neck pain. The last I heard it had been taken off the market, but I don't know why.

I very rarely get any warning via wierd vision, but when I do it's like a cross between seeing those floaty transparent things that everyone gets, and a kaleidoscope. That lasts for about half an hour before I start to get pain so I take a tablet and more often than not that sorts it out.

I've not found any food or drink triggers even when keeping a diary for about a month, but I have found some things have a significant chance of bringing one on.
They mostly involve stress, lack of sleep or bright light.

Thinking about it as a type of headache is strange, because I don't get any pain in my head. I get pain in one eye or the other and in the back of my neck on the same side as the eye pain.
The best way I can describe it is like have toothache in my eye, and the neck pain is almost as bad.
Not always, but quite often I get nausea with it as well, but I don't mind that too much because I know that I always feel much better after I've been sick. As much as its not nice, I try to help that along if I can.

There are some things I've found to help relieve the nastiness of it if the tablets don't work, they may or may not work for others.

Block out as much light and external noise as possible and crash in bed. I can normally fidget around until I find a position that hurts least, and I try to stay there, stay still, and fall asleep.
I'll often put the radio on very quiet as well. Although it's noise it's not unwanted noise that you can't stop, and it just helps to distract my mind.
If I get thirsty, a cup of tea with about 6 sugars goes down really well. Can't stomach the thought of coffee with a migraine for some reason.

The other thing that really helps is having a shower, just letting the water hit my neck where the pain is. I'd have spent many uncomfortable afternoons rolling around the bed in tears if it weren't for discovering that the shower helps no end.

Sorry again for the long post. I hope there's something in there that helps, but hope even more that you don't need any of it.
 
Region 3 most of what you say re neck pain, nausea, quite room, eye sight yup that was me. Feel fine this morning and off out for 18 in an hour so will be interesting to see if there's any after effects.
 
Last 2 years I've had a few, mine are an aura thing then horrible vision disturbance for 30 mins or so, then just feel a bit motion sick/nausea/light sensitive/tired which lasts up to a day, dont get headaches fortunately. Opthalmic migraine I think they're called.
Wasn't aware of any trigger until recently, had a whey protein shake as part of a weight loss effort and ocular migraine came on very quickly, didn't make the connection until I did the same thing a couple of days later and wham it happended again immediatley so protein powder is binned for now.

Yep... Get the doc to help you find the trigger! I used to get them triggered by dehydration ... Plenty plenty of water (esp when playing golf) made a massive difference. But you hear of all sorts kicking them off.

My missus bought me some stick on cool-strips for sticking on your head when you get them...they do help.

Apologies and you are correct. HID is feeding me bum info. She's a nightmare. Imigram is for the onset but she's on Imipramine daily. She was on Propanalol before that but the doctor switched to Imipramine as they think it works better. She's definitely much better these days
 
I used to be a regular sufferer from aged about 10 up until I was 21.
Triggers were cheese, chocolate, milk, ice cream, bright light, sun reflecting off anything, hot weather, smokey pubs, loud noise and a few more.
I had migraines more often than not, but the one that did it for me was one that lasted six weeks and ended up with me losing my sight for a few vert scary hours.
This was back in '79, at which point I tried something that was regarded back then as witch doctory.
Accupuncture, as simple as that ............ but not that simple back then!
I had a migraine a couple of weeks into my course and I've had two in the following 37 years!
It effectively gave me my life back.
It doesn't work for everybody but I seriously recommend you give it a go.
