Membership cost increase

Well worth that fee. How was a £2,000 increase received?

£200 ! It didn't go up by much the previous year, due to the course being closed for two months in the summer. Fortunately the greens are better than ever now, so whilst we lost a few members on renewal as per usual, we had plenty of replacements, and they all paid a joining fee of £1900. Imagine we are still competitive compared to local courses such as Liphook, Hindhead, Farnham, Hankley etc.

Considering the cost of those other clubs in the area you have got the best deal by a considerable margin

It’s a better course and club than Hindhead and Fanham , better atmosphere than Liphook even though I like the course and whilst Hankley is the best course in the area Blackmoor is far better value for money.

Think ours went up 10%, though they also took away a couple of perks (last year we got a one night hotel stay and a hotel restaurant voucher). Think if i pay in one go its £1150. For two courses on my doorstep I can never complain its not good value for money, but would like to see more investment in the place.

Maybe, maybe not…I briefly thought of Blackmoor before joining Farnham, but as I live 2 miles from Farnham and 9 miles from Blackmoor I went for convenience and minimal travel cost…👍

I was hoping to join somewhere local this year but I won't be.
There are 5 courses within a 5 mile radius of me and the prices they are asking ridiculous, considering they've hardly been fully open all winter.
Near double the price of superior courses in North Wales that are open year round.
I'll remain a golfing nomad for the foreseeable.

Which courses are you looking at and why do you consider the prices ridiculous. Bearing in mind how wet nationally we have been, even some of the prestige courses around here, including Sunningdale and Swinley Forest, both heathland and usually well draining have had days they have been closed as the greens have been flooded. Some courses are struggling with the water tables

If I still lived round there, I just say to Hankley, "just take my money!!" 😉
You need a lot…and friends…😜

I sometimes ponder on whether or not I’d want to be a member as it’s only 15mins from my front door. It doesn’t feel like my sort of club…but I have a feeling I’d probably find myself joining for the course…despite my other reservations.

My course did a weird thing this year.
They put up the 7 day fees up by 3% but put the 5 day fees up by 9.3%
Which takes the 5 day membership to within £100 of the 7 day membership
It's almost as though they want to scrap the 5 day membership category.

I'm thinking of doing a flexi membership next year & taking out a full membership at a club 15 miles away, as my home course as it is at the moment is pretty unplayable / shut 4 months of the year, so my 12 month membership in reality is only for 8 months of golf.

Keeps the gap similar otherwise the gap between the 2 always gets bigger at the same rate…..

Why take up members spaces at 5 day rate when you can use them at full 7 day rate. I’ve heard of this at a few places in the south east.

Happened at my old club, got rid of 5 day membership, everyone had the same access to the course and everyone paid the same. I quite liked that idea. It did get some backlash, 5 day members complaining that they did not want to pay to play at weekends when they did not want to golf but, to be fair, the counter argument from the 7 day members is that most of them only wanted to play at weekends but had to pay for the extra 5 days and so really nobody was hard done by in comparison.

What’s interesting is the “typical” attitude of 5 day members when 7 day members try to play at prime weekday times. It’s like they own the course Monday to Friday

I have seen that, at my old course before the change, there was a group of the high and mighty of the club that basically took over the course every Wednesday with the odd situation of calling it a roll up but you had to be invited to take part.

Some clearly saw it as weekday and weekend members.

With everyone paying the same, nobody can claim to be any different.

£1400 plus 50% JF for short courses just over 5500 yards, Woolton, Lee Park, great courses in summer but are closed most of the winter every year.
Compared to courses in North Wales just over an hour away that are open all year e.g. Prestatyn is £750 with no JF, the prices are criminal.
It's supply and demand I suppose because they are not short of members, the Joining Fees have just been reintroduced to 'scare off' potential new members.

I think when it comes to ridiculous it is all relevant to the person. Some people are happy to pay 5k a year for membership as they can afford it, others see 1K as ridiculous. I have given up my membership at my club as I started to find it ridiculous. $240 a month, which for around me is a good price for such an amazing course. But on top of that it is cart only at the weekends and that costs you another $20 a round. So play just once a week and you are in the hole for $320 a month. Could not really get any games during the week because of my shifts. So basically was paying $80 a round. I worked out that in a year I had only played about 40 rounds so actually ended up paying about $95 a round, I can do pay and play there for $65 a round or $50 if with a member.

How I wish I still lived in old blighty where you can be a member of somewhere good for 1K a year and not have to pay cart fees on top of that.
