Just wondering the influence that McIlroy's closest advisors are having on him. The break up with Holly, the link up with Wozniak, the sudden dislike of links, the preference of US courses, the significant investment in his Northern Ireland home then his decision to move America and then there was the uncharacteristic twitter outburst. Don't get me wrong Rory has a greater chance of winning tournaments stateside but it just seems as though he is being moulded to usurp Tiger, or at least go head to head with him.

He'll draw in US Irish crowds, he is now a major champion 'holding hands' with the world number one tennis player (who is conveniently part of the same management group) it all seems a little artificial to me, especially after watching his documentary. Call me cynical but it's all a little scripted for my liking. What are your thoughts?

I would say of course he is manufactured and has been since the age of whatever he was, I would like to think they were his own choices but sadly think the lure of the dollar is now his management teams thinking.

Well, of course the dollar is his management team's thinking. That's what they are there for.

I just don't really get what he's done that so terrible recently.

He split up with his girlfriend

Absolutely none of our business.

He might be going out with a gorgeous tennis player.

Good luck to him - who wouldn't have at that age?

He refused to accept he should change his game to improve his chances in high winds at the Open.

Seems eminently sensible to me, why would you change a game that is working pretty damn well for one week a year when it may or may not be windy?

Look how well it's gone for Kaymer since he started trying to hit a draw for the Masters.

He stuck up for his caddy.

Quite right too. If he believes in him, then he needs to stand up for him. Granted, he could have handled it a bit better but, firstly, he's only 22 and, secondly, do we really want golfers who just mouth platitudes and never say anything of interest? We've got enough of them as it is, thank you very much.

He's buying a house in Florida.

So what? What's it got to do with us where he lives? If he thinks it's better for him to have a base in the US given that he'll play a minimum of 6 tournaments (3 Majors & 3 WGC events) over there and likely more with warm up events towards those big ones.

He's switching to the PGA Tour?

Boo hoo. So what? Is the sky going to fall in? Plenty of better players than him have left for the US and the European Tour is still going strong.

I watched the documentary and he came across to me as a decent, polite, good-natured kid with a sense of humour.

Will he have media training and PR people? Of course, he will. He's a bloody golfing superstar.

But, manufactured? Not a bit of it from what I could see.

Great post.

Some of the whataboutery posts on this forum are just incredible....like a bunch of fishwives.

HRC I agree with everything you've posted but I'm wondering whether many of these things are his decisions or whether they are being taken with a heavy influence from his management team. Playing in America will bring even more focus and pressure on him than the European tour. When he snapped defending his caddy it just seemed as though maybe the pressure and intense scrutiny got to him. I'm not saying any of his choices are wrong but would he rather be Holywood instead of Hollywood?

Pretty much agree with HRC except for changing his game for the Open. It's only one week but it's THE OPEN! I think with his ability he should be able to learn a few different shots that would help him when the conditions get tough so I hope he has a rethink.

In fairness I think he was speaking in the heat of the moment so I'm not taking that one too seriously. He knows it's the oldest and greatest of the Majors and very few great players have eschewed the chance of winning it.

Put yourself in his position for a minute. Someone picks fault on your nearest and dearest; what do you do? I, for one, stand up for and defend mine to the hilt. If I choose to blame/chastise/slag them off, that is my prerogative.

As for a chance of a high profile, extremely attractive girlfriend for a relationship of whatever nature, at 22 I would have (and did). Will not name names though ;) ;)

Some of us may still be gentlemen

Has he split up with his girlfriend again? the one he got back with at the end of his documentary?

Hi,
Think a big part of the reason he is heading back to the states is his big pal Gmac is now based there. I think he will still play the min number of events to keep his european tour card as he has to if he wants to play Ryder Cup.

Yes. Now with Caroline Woznizaktksiai, apparently. Do keep up! ;)

This is me keeping up! I dont think much of Caroline Woznizaktksiai.

The Wozniacki thing isn't real, all hype to get more exposure and generate more $$$$ for them both set up by the management company.

They are both professional sports stars on different tours 40+ weeks of the year so a real relationaship isn't possible. Gets them in Hello, film premieres, lots of non sports attention, advertising deals etc etc.

Management co are there to make Rory money, he has employed them to 'steer him' in the right direction which is what they're doing as far as I can see, may seem greedy to us to focus on cash but fair play to him, I'd probably do the same. US open win has opened a lot of doors in US for Rory.
