Losing weight/fitness thread

South Lanarkshire Council has an excellent scheme for the over 60's called Active Age.
For £10 a month we
get access to:
My missus and I have joined and it's a great scheme for keeping fit, meeting people socially and giving us some activity in our retirement.
That’s brilliant, we have a scheme around here, but nowhere near that good.

Tried something a little bit different today, decided to do a slow 10 miler, as it was to be slow I thought I’d try a weighted vest.

Did a bit of research, main advice was to wear no more than 10% of your body weight, so vest weighed 7Kg and on initial fitting it didn’t really feel like much…felt it up hill after about 2-3 mile.

10 mile done in 1:39:09, so pace was ok.

Totally different feeling to wearing a pack for a CFT etc, and a lot less weight, anywhere between 15-25kg,(depending on OC) but weird as it’s distributed around your middle.

Has anyone used one or have experience of them? Not sure i’ll use it for short runs, but maybe for the longer slower runs.

I’ve got one can vary the weight from 7-20kg. Use it with lighter weight for long runs or heavier for circuits and long walks.

Makes a huge difference in how you train and totally different to logging a Bergen around.

Cheers mate, what benefits did/do you see from using one?
Definitely see the benefits for muscular endurance and VO2 improvements. Plus speed as well over the longer distances, running with the extra weight obviously is harder and creates more stress, so when you run without it there’s definitely more spring in the step and better lung capacity.

I usually do it every other week so I’m not over doing it but that’s been plenty for me to see big changes.

Decided to change my swims (maybe) and do 3x1000m per week rather than 2x1250m.

Means I spend less time in the pool each session (just over 20 mins of hard work) and swim further each week.

Will see how it goes - but definitely feels less rushed to get back to my desk at work within the hour

Fresh start and new focus from today. Deload this week to get back into it, Legs & core today, followed up with a 2 mile bike erg sprint and 1mile treadmill run as a buy out. Even going lighter my legs were gone by about 200m into the run pushed it for an 8:35 mile but has left me walking home jelly legged and knackered!

Range tonight see how that pans out 🤣

So weighed in for the final week of the challenge at the gym. Went from 103 kg to 93.2 kg in 6 weeks. Lost 5 % body fat, so going to continue on with the coach to see where I can get too.

Whilst trying to train for London Marathon.

Well done mate, awesome effort!!!!

On a side note I’ve been doing a bigger portion of cardio since Xmas and yesterday ventured into beluga bags on the tread mill. Thought I’d be sensible and start with the 10kg bag, drop the average gradient down on the machine pre programmed course by 2* and generally found the task easier than expected over 45mins.

Woke up this morning and aches I’ve never had are crazy… WTF!

Tempo run this morning, I've had a bit of a niggle in my right Quad. Had a sports massage on Monday and my massage therapist thinks it's just a very tight and not to be concerned. So going back next week for another go at it.

So 1 mile warm up straight into 2 miles at 8:10 minute mile, followed by 2 minute walking recovery. Then a mile at 7:50 minute mile. Hit both the reps at the higher end of the range. My cool down is always fast unless running with others. So averaged 8:59 minute miles for the whole 5.7 miles. Whilst running Quad felt fine, although a little achey now.

2nd session back and very different from what I’m used to. Was really focused on mobility and rotational core work. The core work was absolutely fine I enjoyed that and the little circuit to finish.

But the mobility stuff 😳! My god I have some serious issues and work to do, years of doing my job, not stretching properly and sleeping in weird places has left me with the flexibility of a scaffold pole! I ache in alsorts of weird places right now and barely got through the session!

Fitness related, had to go into Sunderland today to the bank, all branch’s closed in the town🤬, while there I went in to Primark as a mate had said they’ve started selling running/fitness clothing.

Went to the Men’s Department and they have some really decent running/fitness clothing at really good prices, shorts from £8 to £12, with liners, without, running shorts with liners with pockets for phones, zip pockets for valuables/gels etc.

Lightweight windproof jackets for £20, breathable, wicking. Really nice stuff.

Also had T’Shirts, outdoor trousers, etc.

Picked up a pair of shorts and a jacket for £30.

Will see how they go, but at that price it was a no brainer.

Look forward to a review, especially if you went with a pair with the liners for phones.

Need to get back on it haven't gained anything last couple weeks but haven't lost

been absolute survival mode with a toddler with a sickness bug and the 6 month old catching bronchiolitis (sp) straight after

the meals have been fine i reckon but the snacking when absolutely wrecked because of lack of sleeping is probably doing the damage

I done a solid 3 month worth of legs and back stretching routines early last year. i felt amazing then the second kid arrived and it went on the scrap heap, it's soul destroying how quickly it goes back to tightness and aching
