LIV Golf

I can't say that I am particularly surprised by this if it is true. As a venture it as about disruption, but it hasn't really panned out and PIF have found that golf fans (for the most part) are a stoic bunch when it comes to the game and they don't really like disruption. There have been several attempts to "modernise" golf (think the Sixes format) over recent years and none have really panned out - sometimes you have to stand back and as "why is that?".

Low viewing numbers coupled with haemorraging some $200M dollars annually signalled a lack of sustainability. Any business venture not backed by a nigh bottomless pit of funding such as PIF, would have folded long ago.

The players won't cry too much I don't think, they have made off quite well from this venture. The event staff and general employess will, sadly bear the brunt as is usual in these circumstances.

I tried to watch a couple of LIV events but couldn't really get in to them, the whole schtick just seemed forced and a little contrived. I jokingly said to the wife that Antifa couldn't even get that many paid actors in their protests...

The planned change to the format spoke to a need for alignement with "tradition" but possibly is too little too late. We can but wait and see what the announcement is. But I hope that PIF do right by the ordinary Joes that are losing their jobs.
I thought it was a mistake trying to go against what you may call tradition and golfers are known to always be against change.
I’m suprised to start with they didn’t try and play more during the winter months and maybe have a match play competition rather than stroke play.

I don't know if it does. The PGA Tour hasn't really been impacted by the LIV players defecting. Sponsor rates are at an all time high and attedances are unaffected.

What would they gain really by relenting?
I think very large fines which help bolster the coffers and having all the best players in the world under their umbrella again would be appealing.
Also when it comes to renegotiating sponsorship they can point out they have seen off LIV and now with the likes of Bryson back the tour is stronger which means they earn more

I don't suppose that would have been very disruptive. They came along as the loud new kid on the block. They found out the neighbourhood wasn't really up for that.

I dont think it's limited to golf. Many sports fans like thier games the way they are. They may bitch and whine about the game a fair bit but heaven forbid you try to change it!

Again though, sponsorship hasn't been affected by LIV. Attendances haven't been affected by the "best players" thing.

I don't see that the PGAT gain much. The players on the other hand, they gain much more.

Yeah it’s certainly not just golf.
Snooker and Tennis have tried things that haven’t worked.
Cricket is about the only one with 20/20 that has taken off.
Possibly darts to a degree.
Maybe it’s humans that don’t like change 🤣

All this could tie in with some of the below

Sergio's mood in Augusta all week & Rahm saying he knows why he didn't play well but can't say why, Bryson hinting "something big" has been distracting him since LIV South Africa which he refuses to comment on + Phil's absence ??????

I guess there is a deal to be made, but in order to ensure another LiV doesn't come along soon, the fines will have be to significantly greater than in the deal offered a few months ago.

I wouldn’t be surprised if contracts of some sort were introduced with the main part being they cannot leave for a certain amount of years.
The PGA know they have the upper hand but will still want the best players on their tour.
The likes of Bryson and Rahm will be fine but for the not so well known players at the lower end and the older guys they may have problems finding a regular tour they want to play on

A lot of the players won’t have any playing rights to play on the PGAT and some on any tour

I'd be highly delighted if LIV stopped.
Other than make some very rich golfers even more wealthy, it has brought nothing worthwhile to professional golf.

Nobody remembers or cares who won the last LIV event.
