I thought it was a mistake trying to go against what you may call tradition and golfers are known to always be against change.I can't say that I am particularly surprised by this if it is true. As a venture it as about disruption, but it hasn't really panned out and PIF have found that golf fans (for the most part) are a stoic bunch when it comes to the game and they don't really like disruption. There have been several attempts to "modernise" golf (think the Sixes format) over recent years and none have really panned out - sometimes you have to stand back and as "why is that?".
Low viewing numbers coupled with haemorraging some $200M dollars annually signalled a lack of sustainability. Any business venture not backed by a nigh bottomless pit of funding such as PIF, would have folded long ago.
The players won't cry too much I don't think, they have made off quite well from this venture. The event staff and general employess will, sadly bear the brunt as is usual in these circumstances.
I tried to watch a couple of LIV events but couldn't really get in to them, the whole schtick just seemed forced and a little contrived. I jokingly said to the wife that Antifa couldn't even get that many paid actors in their protests...
The planned change to the format spoke to a need for alignement with "tradition" but possibly is too little too late. We can but wait and see what the announcement is. But I hope that PIF do right by the ordinary Joes that are losing their jobs.
I’m suprised to start with they didn’t try and play more during the winter months and maybe have a match play competition rather than stroke play.
