Go for it.
It may reach & if it doesn't you should only have a flick.
As for a favoured distance - I believe that I am more likely to get close with a pitch/chip from closer in than from, say, 100yds. That could well be due to lack of practice from that range.

Have a go. If it doesn't quite make it it'll be chipping/bump and run distance away. I fancy my chances more from 20yds than from 120yds.

I would hit my favourite and most consistant club to ensure I was down towards the green and on the fairway. Would hit my hybrid followed by a wedge or a chip and run depending on conditions.

everything i have is about 220/230 on a good day with no wind, so i wouldnt reach anything to get in trouble.

Unload the 3w, even if i duff it i will still only be left 8/7i in as a 3rd shot for GIR

Im with this thought too, I hit my 3w off the deck reasonably well and can get it out there 240 with a Sunday best hit, so approaching the ball for my second shot my first mind set would be 3w unless i had a bad lie in a divot or depression in the fairway in which case i'd knock up a 4 or 5 iron.

For me the nearer I get to the green the easier my par becomes, with no trouble in the wayt there is no merit in laying up, there is more to take into account than just yardage however.

It would take a Sunday best shot to get that sort of distance off the deck but if I was hitting the ball well and conditions were favourable, I'd probably give it a pop. Hit a couple of beastly 3-woods this weekend that were about 230 AND on the short stuff, so that's probably swaying my decision right now! Par would do me just fine though, so I wouldn't risk it if I thought I'd be left with a challenging or long 3rd shot.

For me it's a 3 or 4 iron 200 yards, leaving a knock down wedge to the green from maybe 60 yds. But I like playing those approach shots, so that 's ok. If I was only decent with full wedge shots, I'd leave it nearer the 100yd mark.

Out of interest, those saying "go for it", are they saying they think they could hit the green? 260 yards off the deck with a fairway wood is some mighty hitting if so. Maybe in summer with good run, but I can't hit it that far at this time of year, and I can give it a decent clip.

i would not get there this time of year, maybe in the summer with a tail wind and a good bounce. my point is that with no danger, id be more happy with a chip/pitch with a wedge, than playing in from 100 yards.

our par5 1st this time of year often leaves 230/240 in as a 2nd shot, bunker about 50 yards short left is there to catch people out who lay up, bunker greenside right for anyone trying to draw the ball in, and the green runs from right to left. no real danger, but i always have a go at it, a 3w clears the shot bunker nicely, and this time of year the bunker on the right is playing more like 250, so a 3w drops me about 20 yards short in a nice area for multiple options of a chip/pitch to a the pin.

I occasionally hit 260yds with a driver off the tee but couldn't get there off the fairway. For me its just get it within chipping distance.

With no danger then I'd take it on.

I trust my short game enough to be able to get up and down more often then not from whatever yardage was left
As soon as there's any danger in front then I'm laying up....

I cant make 260 off the deck with my 3 wood so I would be looking to get it to 60 or 70 yards from the pin.

Im not saying Id get there but if i can get it up there 240/230 leaving a 20/30 yard pitch i'd be more certain of par or a chance of birdie, for me the closer you get to the green the better.

Assuming I'm on the fairway (why is there a chip out sideways option?) I'd go for it but not with everything I've got.

Nice smooth committed swing and if I catch it well and it gets a decent bounce it might make it. If I don't catch it well I've not lashed at it so hopefully will be reasonably straight and leave 30-60yds for a pitch on.

I managed 230 to the front edge of our 2nd green on Sunday with a rescue wood so would probably manage it with a really good one.
But if I didn't I'd rather have a short pitch/chip than a 100yd wedge.

Always give it everything you've got! A kindly bounce, etc and you're on the green in two.

You'd only lay up if there was some form of danger in front of the green.

260 is a good way to go, i would give it a go, knowing if i didnt get enough run I would have a reasonable 3rd from not too far, and should hopefully be able to create a birdie chance from there.

I must be crap as I can only hit my 3 wood 230-240 off the tee never mind the fairway

It's a no brainer for me, either a 5 wood and 56/60 degree wedge or a 7 iron and a pitching/approach wedge
