Some refreshing posts on this thread

Gives me confidence that the way i go about playing the game can take you to a decent level.

Would the other 20 be Pulls then?

Nah, straight pulls aren't really on my radar. 20% will be a mixture of slices, "bottom rungers", and necks. Most are still in play, so I just go and try to hit a decent one from there.

That's the whole point mate - I'm off 2 by keeping it simple. I have no idea (and never have had) about planes and paths except that the latter leads to the former immediately prior to a nice holiday somewhere ;)

I got to 2.7 like this, basic simple repeatable swing, the issues came when I started J Arthuring or snap hooking (they always came under pressure) in bounce games I just tried to shoot under par and thought about the course and not the swing.

When I joined this forum I learned a lot and it has helped in identifying the issues, however the Tom Watson DVD and John Jacobs early book where he uses drawings not pictures is all I really need, I thought I needed more to get better but it's created other issues (domino effect) and 4 weeks ago went back to simple basics and I'm striking the ball so well now I'm even impressing myself.

So 2 simple swing thoughts to work on this winter and a massive h/cap reduction goal for next season.

My (long winded) post is genuinely to ask Robobum at his current level what he does when the swing starts to go wrong?

Never seen you swing Pal... But if you dont pull the ball then my uneducated guess is that you push fade the ball which is hit with an inside path and its a path that most people taking up the game need to learn...
Firstly so that they get more distance and secondly so that its more consistent and thirdly its a shallower swing.....
I would also hazard a guess that your slices are actually pushed shots with an open face.....Push slices.....
If i am right then you play a shot that is well controlled (more control than a draw) and thats as long as a draw....

But thats just a guess at what you told me.... Probably way off the mark.....:whoo:

If it goes pear shaped during a round then I just try to muddle through it and try to pitch, chip & putt a score.

Any practice I do is just trying to groove tempo - so I go hit some balls to try to get that feel back.

The necky, shanky & thin bad shots I hit come from short, quick backswings.

I have absolutely no idea what you just said there mate

The 'keep it simple' approach will work for some people, but not all. I for one enjoy learning as much as I can about my swing, and how to swing well, and I think that unless someone gets too obsessive about it and suffers paralysis by analysis then learning as much as possible about something you are trying to get better at (and are passionate about) can only be a good thing, and can be just as enjoyable/rewarding as playing.

There's the scenario of two players out on the course, they are both playing bad... the one that's made the effort to learn stuff has the ability to spot what he's doing wrong, fix it on-course, and has a blast for the rest of the round. The 'keep it simple guy' hacks it around for the remaining holes getting more and more frustrated with the way he is playing, tinkering with his swing because he has no clue what he's REALLY doing wrong, and booking up another lesson when he's finished.

I'm not saying the keep it simple approach is wrong, it's just not for everyone... some people, as you say, don't have the ability or desire to learn all the technical stuff, others do, and whether it helps them or not is down to the individual. You don't have to be a pro to benefit from knowing all the technical stuff about the swing.

All my opinion, of course. :)

I think it's worthwhile pointing out that people are not all the same and have different natural coordination levels. What seems like a simple manual task can be very difficult for some. Much like mental aptitude, their is no real norm.

True.....but you do have to be pretty bloody good otherwise you don't have the ability to utilise the knowledge.

Hmm maybe, I don't 100% agree tho. I'm just about single figs and through learning and associating swing feelings with swing/ball-flight knowledge I'm starting to be able to fix issues on course. I don't think it's rocket science.

It isn't......if you keep it simple ;)
