Reading through the December issue of GM I spotted a couple of things that I have an issue with.....

1)On page 119 part of the 'Private Lessons' part it has a bit about practicing your pitches where it goes on to say 'if you don't have a practice green or chipping area at your disposal you can use the 1st tee and the area around it to practice short pitches'.....This will no doubt if read by less educated golfers result in disqualification for folk practicing on the course...a poor bit of writing I'm afraid!

2)A few weeks ago the word Gypsy was used in a thread on here then the thread was deleted by over zealous mods citing 'advertisers could be unhappy etc'......I read the wonderful Bill Elliots article where the same word is used...presumably GM really should have pulled Bills piece then...??!! :D

3)We have a piece with reviews of Wine!!

Come on guy's get back to writing good quality articles please.

Check out rule 7.2.b.

Chipping and putting etc is allowed on the next tee to be played.

Not the area near it..

It looks like on point 1 I may stand corrected...if so what a strange rule and one I was unaware of,I was under impression that practice was permitted without causing delay on a green or tee not the 'area near' as well....how near is near and who decides that then?? :D

Anyhow points 2 and 3 stand!

Extract ....

A player must not make a practice stroke during play of a hole.

Between the play of two holes a player must not make a practice stroke, except that he may practise putting or chipping on or near :

a. the putting green of the hole last played,
b. any practice putting green, or
c.the teeing ground of the next hole to be played in the round, provided a practice stroke is not made from a hazard and does not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7).

One assumes that the 1st tee would be viewed as the next hole to be played.

Not the area near it..

Yes you can!

Rule 7-2. Practice During a Round.

A player must not make a pracice stroke during play of a hole.

Between the play of two holes a player must not make a practice stroke, except that he may practice putting or chipping on or NEAR:

a. the putting green of the hole last played.
b. any practice putting green, or the teeing ground of the next hole to be played in the round, provided a practice stroke is not made from a hazard and does not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7).

although the rules let you "practise" on the course how many people do? I mean how often do you see people practising there chipping or putting on the next tee?

It depends how long I have to wait, and how bored I get.

I like wine.

Bill makes it clear that the G word was not his, it was forced on him by the interviewee.

Simples.

I'm sorry guys but how many issues have their been while this forum has been going and this is probably the first time anyone has really found anything to moan about. For what its worth, the ruling on chipping has been solved by several guys on here and in the article the is a caveat for the use of the G word. As for the wine, I agree that not really relevant and to be honest it looked like a space filling piece to me.

The use of the word gypsy in the thread was the posters word not that of GM so tell me where the difference is??

No difference.

Totally agree HJS that the wine bit must have been a filler...or at least I bloody well hope it was and I also hope there is no spare spots in future issues.

Look, this a great forum. Let's not spoil it by becoming so-called politically correct like the government or the BBC. There is nothing wrong with the word 'gypsy', it's what travellers have been called for eons.

I agree that the wine report was unnecessary, and the practicing has already been sorted by earlier forumers.

Not strictly true Homer, I recall Dodger having a good moan on here about an article in GM reviewing a private golf club.

Nothing wrong with constructive criticism though, keeps the writers on their toes! :p

I haven't seen the December mag yet but I take Dodgers point on the wine. Is it not however something to do with many golf pros being owners of vineyards and selling wines in their names i.e Els, Faldo, Donald etc??

Birdieman,

I'm presuming your talking about the review I did on the GM pages of a pay and play called Tinsley Park in Sheffield or Tylney Park that Dodger didn't like as I can't recall too many others apart from the regular course reviews that appear each month.

To be honest the Sheffield one was featured as there hadn't been too much stuff in the review section and I needed something to use and to be honest I thought the KeefG did a good piece and it made a change to review what seemed a decent and cheap pay and play. Similarly Jahmoo did a good piece on his home track and again I thought a course review made a change from pieces of kit. It'll be interesting to see what my successor does with the review section if it is going to continue (they may well change the format with a new man at the helm).

If I'm wrong, what review are you referring to?

Wasn't it a review of a course that 99.9% of golfers wouldn't be able to play as it was "so exclusive". i.e. a waste of time reviewing it as we could never play it?

The problem should not have been the use of the word GYPSY in the deleted thread but the context it was used referring to the theiving part of the title.

How long would a medal round take if they all chipped and putted on the next tee? We would have a 6 hour round.
