When I was a wee chap having lessons, my instructor made me collect all the balls for the last 10 minutes of my lessons.... i only had 2, he wasnt worth it.
I guess it depends if the guy giving the lesson works for the range, or is more independant. I don't think it's unreasonable to charge for balls if the coach doesn't get them for free.
I've had about 4/5 lessons in the past & always had to pay for the balls. I do agree tho it is a bit tight.
Would you pay a driving instructor for diesel? He ent driving the car?Don't think it's that unreasonable, someone's got to pay for the balls and the pro ain't hitting any! If you're happy with the price of the lesson + price of balls then I wouldn't worry. Otherwise I'd go elsewhere.

I'd expect it to be included in the cost of the lesson. After all the instructor wouldn't be randomly driving around for an hour otherwise! Much like golf, I'd expect the balls to be in the price of the lesson, but if I had to pay for balls separately and the lesson + balls is better value than the alternative, then it wouldn't matter to me.
A driving instructor and fuel is a bad comparison really - the instructor has to pay for a certain commodity (i.e. fuel) but a golf pro doesn't really pay out of his own pocket for range balls - they just put a token in a machine which costs them zero and is probably incidental to the range business anyway. It's not a great way of encouraging anyone to take lessons and as stated earlier for the prices quoted is a bit of a cheek. People vote with their feet and in this case I'd be inclined to look elsewhere if you feel ripped off - it almost sounds like being charged for your knife and fork at a restaurant (a better analogy perhaps)
