Is there anyone here who has actually given up?

When I get back to 18 handicap I will give up. Refuse to have more than one shot on a hole. Real men .......................

Yep, I quit about 4 weeks ago, hadnt been having fun on course for quite a while, on the day I stopped I really hadn't wanted to play, was ahead of my fellow competitors score wise but in my mind i hadn't hit a decent shot in 9 holes, soldiered on to the 15th, hit my tee shot, thanked my PP's and said thats my lot. Resigned my membership that afternoon (after 20+ years as a member) and havnt looked at a club since.

I have committed to 2 charity events later this year so will play in those.

After 4 weeks do I miss golf ? - in truth I think I do, however untill I really feel the need to play again i shall stay away, who knows maybe the bug will bite again very soon and I will develop the ability to laugh at my shots/scores instead of letting them anger me.

Happy golf to all. :)

I really hope it does, you too nicer a playing partner not to be out on the course

I gave up paying serious golf for about 15 years after I moved down to London from the Midlands. Partly for financial reasons as I got married and took on a big mortgage, but also because it seemed that you had to put down your name at birth and be related to Royalty to have any chance of joining a golf club anywhere near London at the time (1970s/80s). When I got to the age of 40, I decided that I was getting too old for energetic sports such as football and squash, and golf would be more suitable, so dug my old golf clubs out from under the stairs and applied to join a club attached to a pay and play course. Even for that I was on a waiting list for several months. How times have changed! :)

P.S. Glad that I did take up golf again, as it gives me regular exercise and a good social life. :) :)

I came close a few times then in Jan this year I actually quit.

Everything about the game annoyed me, my game was getting worse, lessons that didn't help, spraying it all over the shop on the range, slow play, crap weather, bunkers with no sand etc etc. Pretty much anything would set me off.

I wasn't enjoying playing and I probably wasn't the best company on the course either.

After a couple of months I started to remember why I used to love the game and it really helped me get things into perspective so I started playing again. Glad I kept hold of my kit :).

I've stopped having lessons, I only go to the range occasionally (I don't practice, I hit balls for fun like I used to, because I like hitting balls) and I don't take it so seriously. It's supposed to be fun, not a chore.

Now I actually have fun when I'm playing, stupid things don't annoy me anymore. i'm striking the ball way better since stopping having lessons and my scores are starting to get back to where they were a couple of years ago.

A couple of months and a complete mental makeover. Impressive! Good luck.

Like Big G, I gave up due to a degenerative back condition (ankylosing spondylitis) when I was in my mid thirties. Now 57, I returned to the game last year. I can't hit it past my left tit but seem to have retained a half decent short game. Playing to 11 handicap, hoping to get down to single figures and enjoying it more than I did way back when.
