Played 14 holes yesterday. Bogey bogey start, birdie birdie finish. 10 pars in the middle. Considering I’ve not played for 7 weeks, except for range and short game I was happy with how I played.
What the hell?Lost QF of our winter league today. Myself and my partner had 1 shot, but 3 holes were closed, including SI 1, so never got it.
Meanwhile, one opponent had 5 shots (getting 4 of them due to shut hole). One of them was the 10th, normally a 400 yard uphill, par 4. Today, it was 160 yards with a bucket hole. He birdied that. Another was the 530 yard par 5 15th, today playing 200 yards with bucket hole. He birdied that, despite a duffed chip that went a few inches.
Ended up losing 1 down. Ahh well, winter golf, at least we were out in the fresh air. Good, close game.
There is nothing written down. So as a group, we just agreed to play it as it is, and luck of the draw as to whether we get our shot or not (although SI 1 is normally closed, if any holes are closed). What the hell? What's the rule for this?? If you were meant to get 3 shots and stroke indexes 1, 2 and 3 happened to be closed surely you wouldn't just get no shots!?

If they were all closed I wouldn’t be getting any shots. But then that shouldn’t matter as the other indexes I wouldn’t get shots on anyway, so if I’m only playing 15 holes that I wouldn’t usually get shots on I haven’t lost out anywhere. What the hell? What's the rule for this?? What nonsense? You'd be playing a scratch match against someone who's handicap is 3 better than yours. That's not fair is it? Even if you pro-rata it to 15 holes, 3 shots over 18 equals 2.5 shots over 15, so rounds up to 3 anyway, or maybe works out as 2 with the vagaries of course handicap etc, but no less than 2.If they were all closed I wouldn’t be getting any shots. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

The stroke index simply indicates where you will give or receive shots, it's not saying those are the only you need shots.![]()
Literally the only purpose of handicaps and shots is make it equitable and fair. Not surprising two low players are arguing against it, I'm sure you hate giving shots to all and sundry.Again that’s just the way it goes
It’s not nonsense at all
And since when did it need to be fair

Anyway let's just hope it never happens to anyone and is a moot point - unlikely that stroke 1, 2 and 3 would be closed and the rest of the course open. I was just wondering if there was an actual rule to cover it. Obviously not.
It’s not nonsense at all. That’s how the index is laid out for me to get 2 shots over 18 holes, more specifically those 2 holes in particular. If we’re playing 15 holes and both those holes are closed I’m not losing out as I’m not playing those holes I would be entitled to shots on. If you get 2 shots over 18 holes , you should be entitled to 1.78 shots over 16 holes (rounded up to 2). Therefore, in fairness, you should still get 2 shots, technically on the hardest 2 holes that remain open. It’s not nonsense at all. Either so it’s all balanced out!
Plus if I’m playing 15 not 18 then I won’t be playing in a competition, would just be social or bounce games which I’m happy to play off scratch.
How does one decide "the two hardest holes"? Is it just by consensus? The handicap index is intended to represent the difficulty of a hole.If you get 2 shots over 18 holes , you should be entitled to 1.78 shots over 16 holes (rounded up to 2). We were talking about match play, I thought. Obviously if you're all playing stroke play, everyone loses a shot on the same hole so whatever, who cares. It’s not nonsense at all. No idea, which is why we just kept it simple and sacrificed our shots on the closed hole. How does one decide "the two hardest holes"? Is it just by consensus? The handicap index is intended to represent the difficulty of a hole.
But in stroke play everyones handicap would be 16/18ths of their full handicapWe were talking about match play, I thought. Obviously if you're all playing stroke play, everyone loses a shot on the same hole so whatever, who cares.
