I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Captain's drive off today. First comp of the year off the normal tees and unsurprisingly it was a bit of a shock to the system. Played reasonably well but they had ironed the greens and that caught me out on the front 9 a few times until I'd adjusted. A 4 putt on SI 1 was particularly hard to take, particularly as I was on the green in 3, the hardest part of that hole 😭.

Ended up with 31 points in the end, not the worst at this point of the season. Oh, and it was bloomin parky 🥶

Went out in the afternoon to make the most of the sunshine. It was windy again but thankfully in the reverse direction to normal, so a little bit more helpful on some holes.

One of those annoying days where you do something good and immediately cock it up on the next few holes. Doing the back nine first, I had great pars on the 12th and 13th, but promptly one-pointed the next three holes. Fantastic birdie on the 4th in the second nine, then one-pointed the next two holes after that as well. Poor ball-striking day with a lot of fats and thins. Putting not great either as the greens have quickened up a bit - definitely missed a couple of very presentable par putts. Driving was good though, and the biggest plus was that I managed to avoid blobbing any holes at least. 15 points out and 19 back for 34 total, 84 gross. Sadly missed out on being a handicap counting score by one or two shots I think.

First medal of the year yesterday off the back tees, with a very strong wind that was blowing in the opposite direction to the normal wind. Wasn’t expecting much but managed a 5 over which was the joint 2nd best gross score on the day. No birdies just five bogeys. 1 because of a short putt missed on the first and two caused by missing the green in stupid places and short siding myself.

Played yesterday and was slightly better than last week but still gash. Drove the ball terribly as I could only find the heel or the top of the face but didn’t actually put any in trouble, just 30 yards short of were they were supposed to be.

Felt I putted better but like a lot of places the greens are hard, fast and bobbly. All 3 of us commented that lots of putts bobbled but I guess it’s just the weather. The new course manager seems to be doing a good job so far, you can see the changes he wants to make.

I didn’t play with my usual partners as they were playing in a county teams event so was paired with 2 guys I didn’t know. One of them was an old chap, just turned 80 and still off 9 with a playing handicap of 11. After a few holes I commented that he must have been a good player when younger and he told me he was off scratch back in the day, had held course records at numerous places, won our club championship when he was 15 after a rule change to allow juniors to play and had been a pro. Was great to see him still driving the ball 200 yards and knocking woods onto greens, was still a good player today. Must have been a hell of a player when he was young.

I’m convinced our green keeper was on a wind up Friday when he cut the pins, current leader of the stableford has 36pts with loads below 30. Was a nice walk but Jesus do we need some water and warmer weather. Hit the ball ok so I’ll take it.

Net 73 in the medal today. Not sure what the leading score is (two days of entries) but I'm 5th today. Typically, my irons, which have been shocking lately, were the best part of my game. I drove the ball long but no necessarily accurately.

It was a rollercoaster of a round to start off with. I made two birdies in the first four holes, but was +4 through the same. A double, birdie, quad, birdie start, with two lost balls.

On 11, I had to play a provisional off the tee and thought, oh well, that's me out of it, but found my first in the middle of the fairway via a tree and that geed me up a little.

On our par 5 18th, I had an eagle putt stop RIGHT on the edge of the hole. It would have been my first and would have meant I shot my handicap :(

There is absolutely no way I should be getting 14 shots off our yellows, though, I know I'm better than that. That's my motivation to cut my cap as I feel like a bandit (even though I'm not even shooting it 🥴)

Oh, also my first round with 3 birdies 🙂

Played yesterday in a medal off our back tees, 3 yards shy of 6,700 yards and quite blustery, that sort of length never easy with wooden woods but fairways are rolling again after all the winter rain has drained out.

Started with a triple but solid if unspectacular after that and scored 88 gross for a 3 over 75 net.

Surprised to find it was good enough for 4th overall, one net 72 and a couple of 74s were the first three places.

PCC went out to 2 so I also got a 0.1 cut.

Clubs were:
Uniroyal, Arnold Palmer - 1, 3 & 4 laminates, released in 1971
Craigton, Royal Gold - 3 to SW, released in 1966
John Letters, Golden Goose putter, released 1947 (I'd guess that this one is circa 1950)

Captains Drive In today.
Shotgun start and me and buggerlugs were on the 7th - one of the furthest points on the course from the clubhouse - long walk down and a long walk back.
Neither of us scored particularly well, course was set up tough with some brutal pins - infact I measured the slope on the 8th at 4 degrees when we’d finish which we were questioning the legality of.
Jamie had the hole of the day, 300 yard drive down the 14th left him with a wedge into the island green - it was a few inches short of his 2nd eagle of the season, but the easiest putt for a birdie you could get. IMG_6500.jpeg

What a lovely day for golf, not the warmest but combined conditions wise it was great.

Started with 4 straight bogeys but managed to turn the ship for a +4 71 at the end.
But most importantly was the team game, the oppos were trash talking us from the first tee but weren’t so chirpy on the 13th tee having even handed a 7&6 whooping.

Big medal comp today. Wasn't expecting much as I had another shocker yesterday and then tweaked my hip so not really feeling 100%
Add in the rock hard conditions and a decent breeze......
Another shocker of a front 9..9 over....excellent.
Started the back 9 well and then everything ground to a halt.
When we got to the par 3 13th tee that made 3 groups waiting on the tee....and it didn't get much better from there...
The change in pace knocked my rhythm and I made a couple of doubles and thought about NRing but made a good par on the next so kept it going.
Then played the last 4 holes in 1 under gross. 2 birdies, including a 2, and a bogey on the hardest hole on the course.
4 1/2 hours we were out there...
I'm now hurting all over and my hip has gone on strike.....I'll take 83 nett 76 to be mid table...
Might need a day off tomorrow

Played my first round of matchplay on Saturday at my new club. No shots as we were same handicap. Was a match where it was only ever 1 up 1 down etc. I ended up getting a birdie on 18 to win 1 up. Was an enjoyable round with some good golf played.

Sunday had my first board comp - 4BBB with the Mrs. Had a decent showing to get 44 points and come 5th on countback. Both of us contributed 9 holes to get a small 0.4 cut today. Ended up winning 2 x dozen balls each which we swapped for pro shop credit to choose something else in time.
