Played Bradford Moor this morning with mate who plays off around 2. Great local 9 hole course in fantastic condition. Absolutely love playing alongside really good golfers. He gave me a shot on every hole apart from 2 shots on 2 and 7. Apart from a couple of poor shots on 2 and 9 I was really happy with how I played.

I've always set up for driver bang on the middle of the face. I've a similar shot shape to Tubes and he mentioned that he'd changed the set up his driver to the toe due to his swing and I've started to do the same. Hitting it so much better, cleaner, straight and further! My putting was very good too. Not played a massive amount over the year but my last 3 rounds have been to handicap.

Anyway, I beat him and finished with 19 points. Great morning. Playing golf and not working - if only I could do this every week!!

Comp this morning playing the worst format in golf - bogey comp

Poor start with 3 bogeys in the first 5 holes to finish the front 9 3 down

3 birdies on the back 9 and a bogey left me all 1 over because I managed to birdie the single hole I had a shot on 😂

A 4 man scramble today and each player had to get 4 drives in. We were 7 under going out but only 1 under coming in 🤷‍♂️. Not a chance of winning but lovely sunny weather with hardly any wind.

Strokeplay comp yesterday.

An 8 on the second after having a meltdown in a greenside bunker. Head was all over the place for the next 3 or 4 holes.

Had birdie putts lip out on 8 and 9 as my head began to clear.

However, 3 off the tee on 10, then the 4th lost in the trees saw me bow the inevitable and NR.

Lost another one off the tee on 18 to cap what I thought was a pretty miserable display. However, did a quick calc afterwards to find I would have scored a respectable 33 points if it had been stableford.

No wonder people hate strokeplay!

To hate strokeplay is to hate golf.
Formats that allow you to not count some of your bad shots is Mickey Mouse Golf, just for fun, not serious, not to be taken seriously.
Strokeplay is real golf, that is why it is played at serious levels. A proper test of golfing ability.

I don't disagree, but if you took a straw poll, I think you would find the majority prefer stableford. Certainly our stableford comps attract more entries than strokeplay.

I think the majority at my club would be the same.

I know that I hold a minority view that stableford is a fun novelty format to be played on such suitable occasions only.
One's golf score is one's gross score for all 18 holes completed.
Stableford allows a player to not count some bad shots. Novelty golf.

Golf is so annoying right now. Cocked it up in the last few holes for the third or fourth round in a row.

Turned up for a greensomes competition, but they cancelled it because of the pouring rain. However me and my mate waited half an hour and it pretty much stopped raining so we went out for a normal round. 1st hole I hit a bit of a skied one just slightly right of the green, and the ball just vanished into thin air. No way I should have lost it, but lost it was. Generally I played alright though. Managed four pars on the front nine, then parred four in a row from the 10th to the 13th to put me on for a good score. Ultimately I blobbed the 17th as they put the tee in a stupid position over on the right with most of the fairway blocked out by trees, and I sliced two tee shots OB. Then 1 point on the last with a silly three-putt bogey. Ended up on 33 points. Utterly infuriating. Also lost the match to my mate 4 & 3 but he was playing unbelievably well so I didn't worry about that (think he shot 75 with two blobs and he plays off 11).

New driver was a beast. There was one I absolutely ripped that Hole19 measured at 258 yards! Never hit anything like that before. Hit a few in the 230-240 range as well. Real game changer. I still hit one massive slice and one top to remind myself that the driver can't do all the work for me though. 😂

Handicap going up I think because I'm losing another counting round. Starting to look like the 'put every card in' experiment is a failure. Feel like I'm playing well, but handicap just keeps rising.

I prefer stroke. I'd never heard of Stableford until I moved to the UK. Don't really care at the end of the day.....playing well is good, playing crap is.....crap.

Got out for 14 holes, straight onto the course no warm up so a top to start 😳🤣 .. but the 5 iron shot into the green was straight as. Ropey next hole but irons were fine just tee shots. Then I settled with my tee shots mostly and just was drilling it into the greens crisp and straight. I was enjoying myself so much I only came in when the rain really started to bounce off the floor.

Played yesterday and shot a 79. Felt like I played terrible, lots of stupid mistakes.

Played today, felt like I played much better and shot a 74. But between yesterday and today it didn’t feel like I was only 5 shots worse yesterday.

It’s a funny old game.

This was one of my pet hates, far too many stableford comps. What I've found is that lower handicap players prefer strokeplay as they feel they have a chance if a higher handicap players has a couple of blow up holes and vice versa.

Was away for the weekend up at Stonehaven and played bang average. +7 on Saturday, decent I suppose with a couple of pints and 8 bottles of Peroni in me by the end of the round. +6 on Sunday with a level par back 9 when hangover was wearing off but nowhere near the prizes in our society. Managed to make it home with 14 clubs in one piece so I'm classing that as a win.

Great weekend away though, was more about the socialising than the golf as I have a stupidly low handicap of 1 in the society so I know I don't have a chance for another couple of meet ups until more people get a cut.

Medal yesterday.
Started with a birdie, followed by 3 bogeys, 3 pars, and then a snowman on the par 3 eighth.
Great par down the ninth, then my usual back nine collapse ensued…
