Another 7am tee time which was nice.
Played the front 9 in +1 and the back in +9 that included a lovely quad bogey.
Had plenty of birdie chances but putted like a nob.
No golf now until next weekend as we’re away tomorrow for a few days

Played this morning after being at a wedding yesterday and having quite a bit to drink 😂

Played like I’ve never held a club before for 9 holes (8 points) but pulled it back with 20 points on the back 9.

Inch away from a HIO on the 16th… pain - but never displeased with a tap in 2.

Note to self - don’t play early doors the day after a few too many 😂

Club Champs First round - 3&2 LOSS.

Played the first round of the club champ knock outs this morning. My opponent won 3&2.

This guy was supposedly an 18.4 index (I'm 17.4 at present and was the lowest index in my class) and he was roughly 5 over thru 14 holes. He absolutely bombed it off the tee and never missed a putt. 18 index aye okay then :ROFLMAO:. Decided to look at his scores on the Scottish Golf app after. Discovered he's only submitted 5 cards since 2022 and 3 of them this year. There is no way in hell that he was an 18.4 index, I'd have said anywhere in the 8-11 range based on what I seen today. Maybe if he actually submitted cards his index would be where it should be and he would've been playing in the B class event instead. 🙄

Thing is, it's not like I played badly and just lost cos I had a shocker. I played very well. The holes I won, I made par and literally had to play perfectly. This guy was just far too good of a player. And I get it, even the worst golfer on the planet can have a day here and there and shoot the lights out but this was just such a blatantly obvious bandit. I can take losing to someone in and around my index no problem but I can't take losing to someone who should never be that index in the first place because they only submit 3 cards a year.

Newton Trophy for us today. Big comp.
Managed 36 points and a two after my ball lipped out on the 6th.
Nowhere near the main prizes though.
Trying a completely new putting technique as well, which felt a bit alien - but I need to stick with it - my putting numbers are not good.

Club Champs First round - 3&2 LOSS. This will probably turn into a rant because I'm fuming and need to vent.

Played the first round of the club champ knock outs this morning. First tee shot, right down the middle, probably about 240-250 yards total. Up steps my opponent. Absolutely smashes one about 40 yards past me. This guy is about 60 and he's just smoked a drive about 280-290 total distance. He then chipped it close and made a birdie whilst I made a par so 1 up thru 1 for him. He went 2 up thru first 3 holes. I pulled it back to 1 on the 4th and then he took over. He was 3 up thru 8 and I was getting a bit suspicious. Halved the 9th Par 5 to go into the back 9 3dn. I won the 10th to bring it back to 2 then he won the 11th to go back to 3dn. I won the 12th and 13th to pull it back to 1dn. 14th was halved. He was 5 over thru 14 holes. He won the 15th and 16th for the 3&2 victory.

This guy was supposedly an 18.8 index (I'm 17.4 at present and was the lowest index in the 'C' class) and he was 5 over thru 14 holes. He absolutely bombed it off the tee and never missed a putt. 18 index aye okay then :ROFLMAO:. Decided to look at his scores on the Scottish Golf app after. Discovered he's only submitted 5 cards since June 2022 and 3 of them this year. There is no way in hell that he was an 18.8 index, I'd have said anywhere in the 8-11 range based on what I seen today. Maybe if he actually submitted cards his index would be where it should be and he would've been playing in the B class event instead. 🙄

I can take losing to someone in and around my index no problem but I can't take losing to someone who should never be that index in the first place because they only submit 3 cards a year. I'm not sour at losing to a better player, I'm sour at the fact he shouldn't be anywhere near the 'C' class in the first place and should've been in the B class. I've e-mailed the club to ask for clarity on whether you need a certain amount of submitted cards to be able to qualify for the knockouts, as I know that is the case at other clubs. Absolutely fuming at that and to be honest pretty gutted as I've put a lot into it mentally this year.

TLDR: Lost in the first round to a complete handicap bandit.

Bit Barry bull**** that…

Simple solution is not letting players play in a club champs if they haven’t played X amount of other comps within a year. We introduced this into our KO’s this year after some doubles teams just absolutely took the mick last year 😂

Feel for you! Obviously a sandbagger who doesn’t care about playing fairly.

Correction. 18.4 index. Either way...

Now that I've cooled down after that just want to make it clear that i'm not suggesting the other player has done anything sinister and have edited my earlier post as it was typed in anger. It could well just be a case that when he plays he never submits cards only on the rare occasion to keep his handicap or play the odd medal etc.

The main gripe is with the fact that someone who has submitted 5 cards in a year is able to qualify in the first place, as that leaves the competition open to sandbagging and cheating. And as the main club comp, that's pretty poor.

3rd day in a row for golf, an open at Hexham. Classy course, lovely setting. Sadly it was a day too far and I wilted in the heat ☹. The control, relative, in previous days, that I had off the tee, with irons, on the green............all gone. Chipping was still good but the rest 😱. It was a long round when you don't know what is going to happen. I'm pleased to have a few days off, go again next Saturday.

Club team match away at the Springs this afternoon. Very hot and draining as the pace was very slow, until near the end when the mother of a thunderstorms hit. Hailstones the size of thumbnails (ouch). Interesting drive back via many flooded portions of roads. (Didn't play great and was well beaten 😕)
Passed a supermarket fuel station on way there with cheapest fuel have seen for a long time, so stopped there on way back, but they'd had to close due to a lighting strike!
When it isn't your day!

Glad you enjoyed your visit LT, the course is playing tough at the moment!! At least they've cut the rough down a little as two weeks ago they had some county ladies thing on and it was brutal🤣

Let me know if you want to revisit soon 👍

At Consett yesterday in the baking heat (23 degrees is considered hot up here). I was tormented by the steep run-offs around the greens and thick rough there. Slowly adjusting to needing less club on approach shots. It's a tricky, short, hilly course with steep cambers on most fairways. We virtually had the place to ourselves on the afternoon. An enjoyable, if tiring round of golf. 89 but should have been a lot less!

He could have just had a day out but infeel your pain . The problem is TT if he is really manipulating his handicap as you suggest, he could just stick the required amount of general play cards (even 9 hole) via the app and hey presto.

Cheers, thank you. I've only played Hexham once before and the rough was up then and I really didn't enjoy it. People kept praising the course so I thought enough time had passed for me to try it again. Very different place with the grass cut to a decent level. Yes, it's playing hard but at least you can find your ball and you aren't wasting time constantly just off the fairway. Now I need to go back a third time, not in 23c heat or after 2 days playing previously (yes I'm scrambling here 😄).

Lovely place though and everyone from the club yesterday was very friendly. A great advert for the club.

Had a weekend away from the wife and kids to play golf. On Saturday was up at Aylth Golf Club in Perthshire. Fantastic day, weather was great, course was in great nick and although the greens rolled true they were very slow. Didn't play great, driver was off again, couldn't make a putt and although I was level for 15 holes I was 8 over for the other 3. I think all the Moretti that I drank on the way round might have contributed to some wayward shots. As is the way when we have an away day we ended up in a pub for the rest of the night and I didn't get to sleep until 1am.

There was an Open on at my brothers course (Drumpellier in Coatbridge) which both of us stupidly signed up for earlier in the week. Had to get an early tee time since I was travelling back down the road in the afternoon. With a massive hangover and rain for the first hour or so (which felt really refreshing such was my hangover) I started treble, double and it didn't improve from there. Was notified this morning that I had an 89 go onto my record, but I n/r'ed a couple of holes so would have shot more. The Open was for handicaps 6 and under, the lads behind us must have been wondering how the hell me and my brother managed to enter as we both hacked our way around.

Still feeling a bit rough this morning, takes me days to recover from a session now.

I got confirmation from the club earlier that as it's a scratch comp you don't need any minimum amount of cards submitted or comps played. Basically leaving it wide open to cheating then. What's the point?

Time to move clubs next year I think, I ain't dealing with a bunch of sandbaggers and cheats anymore.

Had the day off today to play with my dad and cousin at Caddington (Luton). Hadn't played it before, it's only £20 so you can't knock it for that. Weirdly we were asked to keep our trolleys off the fairways - not heard that one before in summer??

There are a couple of odd kooky holes as well. Like the 5th, a short par 4 but internal out of bounds all down the right where the 6th hole is - and in these conditions everything rolls that way so I was screwed. It's a blind a tee shot as well so I was absolutely clueless as to where my ball was. I just blobbed the hole and later found my ball while walking up the 6th!

Aside from that blob my front nine was decent and turned in 16 points. Then the wheels came off as they usually do these days. Doubled a simple par 3, then tripled a par 4, a nice par just for banter followed by a blob and two more doubles. Then the thunder that we'd been trying our best to ignore got too close for comfort and we ran in whilst being peppered with hailstones.

Nearly all my problems seemed to be short-game related. Instead of looking to get up and down it's an underhit chip and 3 putts, or knife it through, chip back up and two putts. The last double was a short par 5, I was only 50 yards short of the green for two! I don't really know what's happened, I think over the last six months I've changed my clubs, changed my chipping technique and now the courses have dried out and baked and I don't know which way is up. Can't even reset to the last point I remember it working because everything's different now.

Oh well, Club Champs this weekend. Deep joy.

A round today that was both bizarre and frustrating, yet at the same time sums up my golf of late.

I've been playing a mix of okay and downright :poop: golf the last few weeks, mostly the latter, so for today's seniors Stableford my expectations weren't high. Okay tee shot, fat 8 iron that luckily bounced through the bunker, then a wedge short, chip and put for bogey. But then my game clicked and I scored 1 more bogey and two birdies to be level gross after nine on 24 points.
Maybe I got a bit excited and tensed up but I only managed to score 8 points on the back nine!

Terrible tee shots, bad lies in deep rough and a lost ball, extremely deflated.

Friendly knock this morning. Didn't bother with a card. Just as well, driving was terrible for the first 7 holes - I was trying out a tip from Mark Crossland that I saw on YT this morning. Safe to say it didn't work. Ditched it, went back to my usual routine which was a lot better apart from sticking it in trees on 16 and 17.

Was very up and down. Tee shot to 8 feet on 15, then 3 putts kinda summed things up.

On the plus side, it was a glorious day for a game of golf, and the company was decent as well.

Out early to beat the heat...
Started on 10, regulation par for 2 points and im already down 2 points as CVG holes out from the greenside bunker for a 2 for 4 - it was going to be one of those days..
I was really steady around that 9, doubled the 14th after a pushy drive into the clan but pars in from there saw me turn in 39 shots for 19 points...
Someone had 3 4 point holes in the first 7 and turned with 22 points
Onto the front 9 and, again, I was pretty steady until bogeys at the last 2 holes put a slight dampener on it.
Another 39, this time for 18 points and I'm home in 78 blows. He played the 9 in regulation for 40 points - off 15 holes as he screwed 3 up..:rolleyes:
Thought a small cut might happen until I saw that exactly the same score, a counting one, was dropping off my 20....oh well.
A better day at the office than of late so enough to be pleased about although I didn't really have a sniff of a birdie.
