I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Day 2 of the Bideford Pairs foursomes and in Saunton East today . IanM forwarded some very helpful notes on the holes which was a great help .
Same front 9 as yesterday going out in 21 points but then dropped 2 on 10 and 11 but got one back on 14th .Finished with 37 and have ended up 8th overall out of 308 pairs for some vouchers 😄
Very happy with that as our only 2nd visit to Saunton and also pair we played with ended up 289th

17points front nine 21 on the back. Struck the ball really well. Great company as well. In other news, our greenkeepers are actually making an effort to tidy the course up. It's looking good at the moment. Once the grass gets growing hopes are currently high for a great season

Club match v Winter Hill on Saturday. Had to play as we were short and no reserves but feeling crap and full of man flu. Gave 8 and 11 shots to the opposition with my partner getting 1. Shot level handicap and we got beat 2&1. The high handicapper rolled in a monster 30 foot putt at pace on 14 for an outrageous par (net birdie which beat my par) and then repeated the trick from 35 downhill on the next. Had it not gone in it was off the green and away. Compounded by hitting a great drive on 16th that drew and then kicked sharp right on landing behind a big oak with no shot. We played well as a pair and enjoyed the match but on another day it would/could have been a solid win. Hey ho. A medicinal Guinness didn't help in the 19th

Got smashed in rd1 of our summer k/o 4&3 giving 15 shots. I would have shot 37pts of my hc had it been s/ford. Normally make it to semi’s at least so a bit miffed this morning.

Just take solace in playing so well despite giving so many shots. I am playing a guy I beat in my run to the final a few years back but he has a reputation for making sure his handicap goes north at the right time so I amexpecting him to be off 16-17 by the time we play (15 at the moment). He is well known for suddenly putting in a lot of GP cards and not playing well. Coincidence???

unfortunately WHS makes this far too common.

Took my mother to get a cataract removed today and had a few hours to burn. Was going to find a range a beat balls but spotted a par 3 course 5 mins from the hospital. Took a chance on it and was delighted I did. 10 holes. 10 pounds for twice around.

Longest hole was 185. Some lovely elevated tee shots. A little brook running through the course.

Skipped round the first 10 in just over an hour.
Ran into traffic on the 2nd loop. Spotted 4 boys hacking around the 3rd. A single on the 2nd as I putted out on the first. Those two holes were over and back so I nipped to the 4th. Great decision. Flew round and back to the hospital bang on time.

Didn't keep score. Hit a few off some tees and just had a ball to myself. Even the walks between holes were delightful. Ronan's Valley. What a nice surprise. Expected a field with pins.

Just got beat on that day. Other than losing (which I understand), what's the issue?

Played a Vet's comp away, and shot 5 over par off a 2 handicap, could not come to grip with the slow greens, but the cost was less then 15 quid for a round of golf, coffee etc on arrival, two sausage sandwich after nine holes, home made hamburger and apple pie and custard when you finish.

Now that is a real bargain.

No issue at all. When I shoot h/c and the match finishes that way it was just more disappointing. My track is tough and I wound have hoped the match would have been a lot closer.
Me too. Shot 79 gross at the weekend giving 8 and 11 shots and got beat 2&1 - played to my handicap not feeling great and got beat. The club won so not costly in the scheme of things

I played in our 3rd weekday medal of the year today, but first, yesterday...

Funeral of a dear friend.
Died last month just short of his 68th birthday. It was not unexpected.
Struggled with MS for 12 years and then diagnosed with liver cancer last year. He was one of those ever-cheery chaps and remained so to the end.
Mrs V met him in 1975 when he came to work where she worked. I met him in 1979 when me 'n' 'er became an item. A very dear friend to us both all those years.
In recent years he has been the only non-relative to be sending me a birthday card.
I felt very honoured indeed when the family asked me to be one of the pall bearers. My first time doing this.
Funeral at the Heart Of England Crem and afterwards at the Constitutional Club in the village where he lived all his life. Club was packed.

When I got up this morning, I felt I might just not be up to it today - but nothing else planned so off I went.
Walking up to the first tee, I still had doubts whether my mind would focus on the golf.
Front nine was scrappy. Couple of big putts for pars on the 2 par-5s and somehow got it round in 4-over. Not one green in regulation and so no birdies.
First green in reg was the 10th and I sank the putt! Managed the rest with 7 pars and a bogey at the 16th. Level par back nine.
Replaced a 6.2 with a 2.7 and looks like I'm coming down from 4.6 to 4.1
Not what I was expecting as I struggled through the front nine - but very chuffed indeed how it turned out.
I need a rest.

(EDIT: I came 2nd place, beaten by an 89 - 22 = 67)

A rest and raise your glass to a dear friend

11 holes with Jamie this evening, we recorded GP scores on the front 9

Just the two of us and the wildlife.

I continue with the struggles of playing Ok, but scoring terribly.

A triple on the 2nd spoiling an otherwise steady scorecard that for the boy that saw him 4 over.

Dicked about a bit on the 10th with some Masters inspired tomfoolery 😂

Having not picked up a club for well over a week, I wasn’t expecting a great deal. First drive I smashed it 50 yards straight down the middle. Apart from losing a ball on the 4th, 8th, 9th, 14th and 16th and playing lord knows how many provisionals. It went well.
Front nine 14 points, back nine 21 or 20 points in the fuddle. Which won back nine.
I have this kind of notion that low handicappers have a different mentality to a high/ me handicapper. I say that because my driving once more was rammel. Yet when I swallowed my pride and hit a 3 wood. The ball went straight and the run out was excellent.
