I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

I didn't play today... but I am playing tomorrow : Beat the Pro 4-ball scramble

Our 4 Pro's start on 1st to set the score (off scratch obviously) while the rest of teams go shotgun round the course. Each team that beats the pro's score wins. IIRC they did 12 under last year so that's gotta be the target. Our team is off 8

Two behind the pro scores but brutal 10% team handicap
Best mate aced the island green par 3 for our only eagle
Net 63 for us

Great day 😀

Roll up. Out at 8.15am. 3-balls. 4 3/4 hours. Lost the will to live early on the back nine after 20 points on the front. We literally waited on every tee and every fairway all the way round.

I shudder to think how long the later rounds are taking today.

76 gross in the April Medal.

Perfect conditions for the first 12 holes and then the breeze picked up a tad. 3 birdies, 5 bogies and 1 double. Currently lying 5th in division 1 with only 1 person under net par.

Couldn't get the green pace early on, but navigated the back 9 in 13 putts.

Nice to get a decent round on the card, I'd been playing really well but scoring poorly in recent comps.

We had a Masters par 3 comp. Front 9 set up with tees so it played the same lengths as the par 3 course at the Augusta. Starter wearing a caddy boiler suit, Green jacket for the winner, Masters menu in the Club house (Cheese and Pimento sandwiches etc.).
Good fun, made a nice change.

Singles qualifying at our place this week. None of us were interested in playing it but we played off the back sticks as that would keep pace better with those trying to qualify.

I had a bit of a shakey start and managed to scrape a couple of pars. Practically duffed it off the 4th but made bogey.

All day long I missed greens and chipped it stiff. Only hit 6 greens. 3 of the par 5s.
One birdie on 17. Bogies on 4 and 13. The rest pars.

The best part of my game was chipping but I'm equally as happy with my approach wedges. Been working on hitting them in lower. Seeing the benefits of that now.

Probably my best score off the back sticks at my course. Definitely didn't see that score coming.

Pity handicap qualifying comps are not happening just yet. That would have helped the cause. 😀

I was out in the first 3 ball in the rollup this morning. A couple of guys got in the middle of the rollup...no big deal and were out right behind us. We let them through on the 4th. The 3 ball that was holding us up a bit never let them through the rest of the way. NOBODY in front of the 3 ball...just didn't let them through. I just put it down to being clueless and not being aware of anything but themselves.

I played today and showed encouraging signs of getting back to form after last year missed 7 months.

Greens had the spring maintenance done this week but still managed to get by with just two 3 putt greens.

Best round since returning. 13.3 differential, should not a few points of my handicap.

Two of the higher handicaps took the money again with 44 points and 43 points, with a few comments from the other players.

86 players across Div 1 and Div 2 and only 3 players under net par...

First round of the Bideford Pairs foursomes at Royal North Devon and Mrs Upsidedown teeing off on the odds ,went in water hazard from her drive but was able to hit a 9 iron out . She then leaked to the right and another water hazard so took a drop and holed out from 62 yards on Par 5 with a shot 😂
Steady for the next 13 holes to be 5 under the card but lost ball on 15th from a thinned 5 iron then dropped one on 17 with another visit to water and finally dropped 2 more on last .
36 points and lying 35 out of 282

Played Burnt Island Golf House Club for the first time today. A challenging little course with some stunning views across the Firth to Edinburgh. T shirt and shorts order for the day in the warm spring sunshine. Had a stretch of 5 consecutive pars between 3 & 7 but came undone after a nearly 10 minute wait on the 8th tee. There was a lot to like about the course, but the 10th is horrible, blind tee shot and blind second shot to the green, no real idea how to play the hole first time. A few too many cross over holes too for my liking, balls raining down from all over at times. Glad we played it, a bargain on Golf Now at £23, but won’t be rushing back.

Out with little chubby bro at first light this morning just for a quick 9

Played the back 9, on 11 which is a short par 4, I knocked my drive fairly well, slight fade and hoped it was short of the fairway bunker, but thinking it might just have rolled into it.

Could we find it? Could we heck, grass no higher than first cut with a bright yellow Bridgestone E6 the sort that burns your retina out if you look at it for too long.

It should have stood out like a beacon of light, but nothing….highly frustrating

Still enjoyable knock, couple of decent holes. We weren’t scoring, but I reckon he just had me 🙄

Why didn’t you put a score in? Would have been tempted if playing off the back sticks

Out for the wife's birthday last night, I was driving her and her mates around til 2am and our little one is staying at Nanna and Grandad's... So I took advtange this morning and nipped out for nine holes before the missus was awake.

The magic I found with driver for one and a half rounds is definitely gone. Back to battling slices again, even with the stronger grip. Hit a couple of reasonable drives as well though. None of the left ones I was hitting on Friday. Also seemed to be battling a bit of an early extension and right block with all clubs, not sure if that was just a bit of tiredness and lack of warm-up though. Despite not feeling like I hit the ball great, I managed 20 points after three pars in a row on the 15th, 16th and 17th bumped the score up (albeit I gave myself a Mulligan after topping the first drive of the day with no warm-up, so played roughly to handicap let's say). Same as Friday really where I thought I played poorly and managed 34. Must be a good round coming when I actually play well...

Missus still spark out in bed when I got back so a plan well executed anyway.

We have an off season. No qualifying from the end of September. Should be starting again in the next week or two.
The course is never fully up to speed by the time our season starts. It's usually still very wet and soft.
So much so that they have decided to extend the playing season towards October rather than finishing it in September when the course is still in great condition.

The score was a nice surprise though. There's still loads of room for improvement.

Had a freebie on the PGA National at The Belfry on Friday, drove it well in places but scoring wise it was 17 holes of complete dross, the only shining light was an eagle at the 13th, driver/3w to about 25ft and walked the putt in.

The new health suite they are building has really ruined the 18th.

Comp this week was today (we mostly alternate sat/sun) and in very trying conditions I played ok but scored poorly.

Short game just isn’t there at the moment, got zero confidence on the greens, just can’t judge the run out. Some of the pin positions today felt like bordering on illegal, the one on 12 was only 2 yards from the right side of the green (which has a fall away from it) and we had a 25mph wind off the left. Many others were right on the top of breaks were if you went 1 foot past the hole you had an 8 footer coming back. Very, very tricky which I wasn’t good enough to deal with.

You gave yourself a "breakfast ball"? Shame and heaven forbid. Ye'll nay be forgiven.

First board comp of the year. Off our back tees shot a steady, but pretty scrappy at times, 8 over gross and 37 pts - so one under my PH for the comp. Good to get rid of a 2.2 off the bottom of my handicap record and the 80 today will replace it with a 6.2 (assuming no PCC). HI will go up by 0.5 to 7.8 (CH of 8 off front tee and 10 off back - and that's fine). Plus I got a 2 so expecting a few £s for that. A 43 pts won it, so I was nowhere near, but tied 17th out of 118 playing so generally very pleased.

Stopped at Isle of Wedmore on the way back from Devon. Only £30 and we had reasonable fun. Front 9 is very short and no dramas. Back 9 is a bit longer has a couple of decent holes, and a couple of shockers!😁😁 Played to half my handicap, so I enjoyed that 😉

But it's not expensive, folk in the clubhouse were smashing... and it's another course on the "played list!"
