How you view brands of clubs

When buying new gear I tend to look at brands which (I think) specialise in that particular field. For me this means:

Woods - Titleist / Taylor Made
Irons - Titleist / Mizuno
Putters - Whatever feels/looks good. I currently have a Ping B60.
Wedges - Callaway / Cleveland
Balls - Played Titleist (velocity/tour soft/true soft) for years but recently bought some Snell balls to try out having read some good reviews.
Clothing - Footjoy / Under Armour

Brands that are not on my radar for one reason or another are Srixon, Honma (hadn't heard of them until Rose started playing with them), PXG (way too expensive). I also wouldn't consider Ping for irons as I've never liked the look of them. Wilson/Cobra are interesting as I generally like the clubs and suit my budget, but never really considered buying them. I guess I'm just a sucker for the marketing of the 'bigger' brands.

PXG / Honma - Rich mans dream clubs

Mizuno - classy irons, so so woods and other clubs

Titeleist - all round quality...possibly the best brand if you wanted to go a single manufacturer in entire bag route

Callaway - possibly the next best brand for a single manufacturer bag, recent irons superb, woods very good

Taylormade - chav brand full of nasty coloured plastic infills and bad graphics....the Primark of the golf world.

Ping - great woods, irons underrated

Cobra - Don't really know...in some regards they are an enigma...I want to like the brand but not sure how....a bit like an odd cousin.

Wilson - Wrongly underrated, clubs better than brand image

Cleveland - wedge classics with some great irons

Srixon - meh...nothing exciting

What I find remarkable about cobra is when rick shiels was doing his videos of past 5 years of this brand of driver cobra was up there with callaway for amount of driver models out in 5 years even though they completely get away with it compared

Proper under the radar

Bridgestone make some of the the best balls in the market but are overlooked, and srixons irons are exceptional

I have to admit when making this list I just went on American golf, listed what they stock and added the stupidly expensive brands lol

Not tried many different manufacturers, so the following is largely based on perceptions than any facts:

PXG - very expensive, custom fit, and for most of us not necessarily better than other brands listed below

Ping - expensive irons, but effective, (I currently use a set of G700 irons which give great distance, but average feel), loyal user base

Callaway / Taylormade / Titelist - make good quality clubs for mid to low handicappers

Mizuno / Srixon - make great looking and performing clubs for the better player

Cobra - mid-priced, good clubs that would be worth checking out

Cleveland - highly underrated irons (I used a set of 588 CBs which give great feel and are great looking), great wedges and excellent value putters (ok I've got their wedges and use a TFi pitter)

Wilson - good clubs, which are well worth checking out (I started with D200s, which were good performers but not great looking)

Nike - I use a Nike driver and hybrid, they were just starting to make some really nice clubs when they pulled out of club manufacture

PXG, and odd made in Japan obscure brands are for people who are loaded, and think having this stuff in their bag makes them interesting.

Titleist for tour wannabees.

Taylormade for people who have no idea what quality is about. It screams tat.

Mizuno, for people who wander round mumbling about butter, as if anyone cares, as it's about getting a ball in a hole, not dairy products.

Callaway for people who like buying new stuff, every 10 minutes.

Srixon, for people who can find a stockist. Cheap version of the obscure Japanese obsessive, and you need to be obsessed to track down where they are sold.

Cobra, I have no idea why anyone would buy Cobra.

Ping, ugly stuff for my Dad to buy.

Nike, died the death because their stuff was awful. Except my irons, which must have been an accident.

Benross, Wilson, etc, for people who shop at Aldi.

Think that has probably covered it.

Ping - easiest things to hit. Great drivers/woods hence why I've gone for them.

Titleist - I think of them for better players really. Hence why none of my stuff is Titleist.

Callaway - kind of just really solid and dependable, decent at most things.

Mizuno - just classy irons. I might go down the JPX route one day.

Cleveland - just think of them as wedges only. I know they make other stuff but I tend to ignore it.

Cobra - dark horse. Never had any of their stuff, and it's never the first name off the tongue but it seems like their gear actually does rival anyone's.

Taylor Made - actually gone right off them. Heard horror stories about their irons collapsing and breaking, plus I hate the fact that they seem to release new gear about 3 times a year.

PXG - for people with more money than sense. I have no doubt it's good gear but to pay double what the other top manufacturers are charging is madness, there is no chance they're that good. It's a little bit of people who buy PXG just do it show off and tell people they have PXGs.

Srixon - completely under the radar for me. Know them more for their balls than their clubs really.

Wilson Staff - "that's Asda price!"

I'll start with Ping as they are my preferred brand. Depending on what's released depends on whether I'd be interested. If its a bladed I'll be less inclined

If I was going to go for another brand, to be honest I'd keep an open mind and see what was working best for my swing. If I had to choose I'd go

Titleist
Mizuno
Callaway
Taylormade
Srixon

To be honest if I couldn't find anything from that list that suited and improved what I had I wouldn't bother changing

Do you have that aswell a brand you want to play one day like a dream brand? Mine was Titleist irons and wedges.. for my 30th couple years ago I upgraded to Titleist iron and wedges . They are as good as any other GI iron but in your head makes you feel good

Cobra I never overly considered but friend of mine plays off 8 he always uses cobra driver and he is a 275 typical (game golf typical so average) driver with 350 his best! He always say cobra suits him.. has their iron now he striking them so well

Another mate of mine plays off 6 he got a cobra driver given to him off his dad.. never looked back says best driver he ever owned

I saw the Honma driver today that Rose uses and it’s a great looking club. Found some interesting things about them to, they got Nippon to make a Modus3 shaft just solely for their irons, no weight reference, a very small step pattern on the shaft which is different to mine and has T-World written on it. I saw the cavity backs and were nice looking but he didn’t have the blades which I’d like to of seen.

Seen a few posts on here where it has Been said that Ping is an expensive make, have I missed something or has the price of shovels increased over the last few years ?

I always compared them to a good set of Spear & Jacksons
