How many comps do you consider "healthy"?

I try to play in every qualifier that I can. I like the added pressure of it meaning something such that you have to concentrate for the whole 18; hence I also prefer medals rather than stablefords as every shot counts.

I've only played in one so far this year, because of the weather.

Like you Amanda, I find playing comps stressful but I'm going to force myself to play more this year. I simply wasn't getting value for money from my subs because I wasn't playing enough.

We have a monthly medal, a mid week monthly medal, and may be one other qualifier a month. So 3 comps per month max, and I don't play mid week.
As a result I put in about 8 cards a year, which is as many as I can fit in.

I would prefer to play more, as I would get more used to the pressure of competition, instead of each comp being the only opportunity to get a cut for the next month or so.

Looking in my diary, between now, and the 26 of August, there are seven weekend qualifiers. So assuming I can play in these, I can put in seven cards between now and September. So two per month, if I can make them all.

our club is the same as murphs - a weekend stableford and a weekend medal every month. (yes there is a midweek stableford but no use for office hours workers). I think that for the 6 months of the year there should be a qualifier every weekend alternating between saturday and sunday. I'd consider playing in 3 out of the 4 as healthy...

its my one gripe with the club, the seniors don't want many comps because they say it gets slower, but the younger members like playing comps.

the seniors are generally free to play every day of the week, but want to dictate what happens at weekends too. the pro just does what has always been done and not really dynamic enough to change.

two qualifiers per month in the season when you lose weekends to holidays / weddings / etc is not enough...

the only unhealthy element is even considering the issue as presented!

if there's a comp on I will arrange things to play rather than play a friendly - same with matches!

I try and play in as many as possible, in fact, I actually struglle to really care about my golf unless its got something riding on it.

It really annoys me when people play at the weekend (with a competition readily available to enter) and dont enter the qualifier even though they still play off the whites in competition conditions.

Your handicap should be a reflection of your abilities, not entering the available competition IMO is borderline cheating as you are protecting your handicap. My mate hadnt played in 5months due to injury and STILL entered the competition on sunday gaining the inevitable .1 that took him from 9.4 back to 9.5. He was gutted, but at least he didnt say 'oh no, i wont enter a comp for a few weeks until I am back in the swing of things.

And also, further to points made previously. I think golf clubs should have at least one weekend medal/stableford on a week in addition to a midweek one for 5-day members.

100% agree with this........

Some people do play too much golf though.
I've even heard of someone taking a SW and a bag of balls away on a weekend caravan trip.
Some folk  ;)

We have a qualifier every weekend at my club, which are alternate medals and stablefords. We also have midweek stablefords every wednesday.I play every weekend comp that i can and play any midweek comps that i'm able to,work/weather permitting.I also play league matches for the club once every two weeks between April and September.

looks like by the time i will be back to playing in any comps i will be a senior(55) and have decided to just play in the senior comps next year and try to win the order of merit shield a long shot but doable.

Who on earth would do that??

Medal round today and on handicap despite 39 putts - desperate on the greens despite really feeling I'd made progress. Some horrid pins but mainly nerves getting the better of me. Can't see any other option but to play as many qualifiers as I can to learn to toughen up??

Tee to green is in really good shape and used to also be affected by nerves but practice has meant I'm more robust over shots even when nervous (like the tee shot on our 4th which I nailed)! I don't spend as much time on the putting green though so that's gotta help - right?

I play every one that I can and enter as many opens and other comps as possible to get some more in.

Played monthly medal on Saturday, have two qualifying rounds tomorrow and another comp on Sunday..... that's a lot of +0.1s the way I'm playing!

Two rounds today; bang on handicap this morning, 0.4 cut this afternoon to get back to 7 and qualify for county champs match play! Roll on the next comp!
