In view of the captain's right of way thread, and comments that captains often seem to come from the same old clique, I'm interested in how the succession of captains works at various clubs.

Does the outgoing captain name his successor? Does the membership have any say? Do any clubs elect their captain?

Normally the VC asks someone and it is then ratified at the AGM where members can raise any concerns.

I'm fairly new at our place but was asked to be vice so kind of got to know the process. The incoming captain selects their preferred choice of vice which is put to a committee of ex captains. They sit around their cauldron and say yes or no :-)

I think it's similar in the men's section although have heard they release either white or black smoke depending on their decision!

Seriously though - from what I've heard they seldom refuse the captain's choice of vice but it has been known.

Our vice-captain becomes the captain for the following year unless he chooses not to take up the role and the incoming captain generally picks his vice-captain himself with the formality of committee approval assumed, I believe.

Our next lady captain is selected by the ex lady captains generally on length of membership, not sure if golfing ability comes into it. Our men's section don't name the new captain until a couple of months before the start of the new season, no idea on what their choice is based.

I was junior organizer for several years, also use to organize the club teams. Did various other bits and peaces for the club too. The past four captains and the current captain propose someone at our club, usually someone who and made a contribution to the club Having said that I did not do those things expecting to become captain it came as a shock to me. However anyone can nominate who they wish and propose them at the AGM.
This will be my last year as past captain we can only propose full members, thankfully since The Equality Act some Ladies have become full members and are being considered.
I don't think it will be long until we see a female club Captain

At the 2 clubs I've been at the past captains all get together and vote for the next one, they then accept or decline. If they decline the one with the next highest number of votes gets asked.

I have been asked by he new incoming captain to be his vice captain next year. I think its the captains choice who to select as their vice but then it has to go to committee vote I believe to get approved.

Ours is not a private members club so the process here is possibly more straightforward than at other places.

I believe the Vice Captain becomes captain at our place and the Vice Captain is nominated by the Captain and approved by the members, possibly at the AGM but I'm not really sure. You can decide to nominate yourself which I think happened last year but was generally regarded by the membership as not the done thing so not sure if it happens regularly.

Our incoming Captain this year is a Female, the Vice Captain is male.

As time go on and golf club memberships change it becomes more a case of "who the hell wants to do it?"

We have even got an advert on our website asking members to come forward if you want to be vice captain next year!

Sad but true :(

Ours is done with a special committee who sit and discuss then invite the person along and then offer it to them, They have never had anyone turn it down

It is sad but it's because it's a massive undertaking.
I was asked at my previous club but I felt I wouldn't be able to give the club and it's members the time and attention required to make a decent job of it.
As has been said, it can be a thankless task - imagine having to be nice to everybody....!!!!

Absolutely. Add the type of attitude that some displayed in the captain right of way thread and you have to wonder what would be the point!

I'm not sure that we will have a captain, in the traditional sense, before too long.

As I have had recent experience of this at a long established members' club and having spoken to many other clubs I can only say that yours is an unusual club.

The vast majority of clubs appear to have increasing difficulty in finding candidates for captaincy.

A friends Dad was captain of a golf club in Lancashire, he reckoned it cost him about £15k out of his own pocket and countless hours to do the job properly. He was honoured to do it.
It's a tough gig.

15k?? What club was it? Must have been a biggie

Do you have a 1 time only rule or can someone do it again..?

I'm sure you can go again - means dipping in to that small pool of people who do things for the club again!

Like yourself, I was asked a few years ago. My daughter was 3 at the time so could not (would not dare) to make such a commitment.
