How do you get to be the captain?

I'm fairly new at our place but was asked to be vice so kind of got to know the process. The incoming captain selects their preferred choice of vice which is put to a committee of ex captains. They sit around their cauldron and say yes or no :-)

I think it's similar in the men's section although have heard they release either white or black smoke depending on their decision!

Seriously though - from what I've heard they seldom refuse the captain's choice of vice but it has been known.

^^^^^^^^^^^^just like this at our place^^^^^^^^^^

I'm the youngest ever Captain at Westerham (39), which is a proprietary club, and it works thus:
Vice Captain chooses his Vice Captain 2 months before taking over as Captain.
Clears choice with the club first.
Then clears with committee / asks said member (this is interchangable).
When Vice Captain becomes Captain, the VC assumes their role of organising Men's team matches, arrange Captains' Away Weekend (although I've done most of mine this year!), announcing winners at Presentation Evening and manning the halfway house at Turkey Trot, which gives them practice at most things they need to do as Captain.

As Captain, I play in:
All Men's and Mixed Club Matches (22)
Captain / Pro event (1)
Pro / Am event (1)
Captain/Pro vs 2 members matches (3)
As many stableford and medal rounds as possible, and with different people (20 total)
Winter and Summer Knockouts (Mens Single, Scratch, Pairs and Mixed Pairs)
Captains' Swansong
Captains' Drive-In
Captains' Away Weekend
Sundry comps (6 per year)

I then:
Host Captains' Day, buying prizes for 4 places (teams of 4) plus raffle prizes and fund/man halfway house (along with Lady Captain this year)
Fund and host Captains' Ball (with Lady Captain)
Hand out all prizes at Presentation Evening (63 Mens' and mixed prizes!) - I have suggested maybe we do some prizes after the comps next year; going to committee in 1 week's time
Attend 6 committee meetings per year
Attend AGM at head table
Listen to everyone's opinion at various times throughout the day whenever I''m at the club.

Didn't realise I did so much. I've earned the waive of subs and that parking space!!! And I'm really enjoying it.

Nice ... did you accept?

I accepted vice captain so will get a chance to see what is involved next year at close quarters before committing:confused: But I dont see it being a problem.

We are a small club with a relatively low number of members and I'm already doing the handicap sec role so I know how it feels to give up hours of your life a week!
