How Are Your Competitions Drawn ?

How are your comps. drawn as far as handicaps go ?

At my place you enter the ballot for a certain time ie 9.00 to 10 and then it's randomly drawn.

Next weeks medal has me (19) another guy (26) and a scratch player playing together.

Is this fair on the scratch golfer ? Or indeed on the high handicappers?

No ours is not drawn , no its not fair on the low handicapper as he could spent more time ball spotting , for the high handicapper he could well raise his game to keep up and play really well or just try to keep up off the tee and not play his own game

You have to be able to play with any other handicap. It's the only fair way to draw comps. What if you're the only Scratch player in the club and the next best is off 10..?

All our drawn comps are, I believe, properly drawn except the Club Championship that is played in handicap order 1st round and position order for the 2nd - don't see why the 1st round can't be drawn though.
Being a Midweek member all our comps are roll-ups so I haven't played a drawn comp in about 4 years excluding GM meets.

This keeps the good guys away from the hackers We have another three competitions, our Spring, Summer and Autumn Meetings that are drawn against time slots. All our other competitions are just a case of putting your name up on the start sheet at your desired start time. Seems to work out well.

We are thinking of moving to fully drawn comps next year and the method you use is favourite to be adopted. Everyone just has to accept the luck of the draw and believe me, you can spend just as much time on a ball safari with a 10 handicapper who's having a bad day as a 25 man. That's just part of the game and nearly all low handicappers are fine with it - so long as it's not every week

Ours are usually start sheets but the few drawn ones we have are random - so anyone plays with anyone. Except the main championship which is done in two divisions.

Similar story here - main club comps are drawn or seeded - monthly medals, midweek stableford is start sheets so you can put your name up with people you normally knock round with, as a single and get in another group or as a pair and take along a single. Works well and you get to know loads of people this way.

At my first club all comps were randomly drawn (the only way to do it imo)
At my present club,start sheets are put on the notice board 10 days prior to competitions,you simply put your name down as near to your preffered time as possible.
At my previous club,tee times were permanently booked on a first come first served basis when the course was first opened !!! Basically,the original members chose a saturday/sunday tee time,and they've had the same tee time ever since (20 years)unless they've decided to change,or one or more of the group have left/retired.
The only fair system imno is to draw names randomly.Not only does this make the game more social,but it helps to reduce the chance's of cheating.

At my club the competition sheets go up about 4 weeks prior to the comp.. There is 3 time slots to choose from and you get drawn with whoever else is in that time slot.

Its a great way to meet other members and to play with different people, and its all done fairly!!

Monthly Medals are slightly different where you can choose who to play with!

All our comps are randomly drawn except that pleas for early or late starts are given due consideration. As a fairly small club, this works by ensuring that everyone is likely to play with everyone else over a period of time and gets round the possibility that a clique develops who may or may not always observe the rules to the letter. We have no problems with the low handicappers playing with higher handicappers - they were all high handicappers at some time. We all learn from each other.

Ours are all randomly drawn except club championship which is in handicap order. I like the randomness of the draw as I get to meet a lot of other members and I don't often find myself with two real low handicappers (I have an inferiority complex on a golf course) so I can relax and enjoy it more

We have no form of draw at all for most of our comps. You turn up in your group, pay your money and off you go. The good point is that you get to play with who you want. The down side is that is not easy to meet others and cliques can build. If you do not have a group then it is also not always easy to find a game.

Basically, the system suits the majority who are long time members who all know each other and are happy sorting things amongst themselves. It is not easy on new members though an integrating takes time and effort.
