Golf Random Irritations

There's clearly some very different, and frankly unwelcoming, views and clubs out there. I've never been at a club where people have messaged to see if they could join a group. There is a gap, someone puts their name there, you smile and say hello when they turn up.

This whole ask permission malarkey just comes across as cold and unfriendly.

I believe thats the exact process used at The Northumberland.
(Youll not find surprising)
Or it defenitely used to be, as it was listed in rules, that used to be accessible online.
You had to email the 1st named member in a slot and ask if you could join up.

The lads I play with usually have 2-3 tee times, invariably we end up with odd numbers in those groups and so sometimes other players will book in. We don’t expect them to ask for permission, it’s their club too.

Yes, we have a couple of members who you’re praying don’t jump in, but even then, it’s not an issue, you just get on with it.

Maybe the OPs scenario is as someone else has said, they’re a 4 ball trying to get the 4th in. I wouldn’t take it personally.

A comp and barging in on someone else’s social game are completely different.
The last place I was a member you contacted the person who was first on the list.
It was more of a common courtesy and a hello to inform them rather than ask permission and never saw or heard of any problems.

Although this was only social golf as all comps were drawn.
Did you “doth your cap” to them when meeting them as well?😂😂

Just to make it clear with the booking scenario. It was a betterball and Crazy just made himself a partner.
We even mention it on our WhatsApp group if we are joining a group.

I don’t see the issue there either tbh. If I’m in a group and need a partner I’d be hoping someone would put their name down so I could play.

It’s literally what I did for our 4BBB matchplay, I put my name on the sheet as a single and someone added their name to mine. First time I met them was on the 1st tee, as a new member I have now been able to play in the comp which otherwise I might have missed out on. We won our first round together and I’ve met a really nice bloke I would otherwise have maybe not spoken to.

No of course not but there was the secret handshake, which could alter depending on whether you were Eton or St Andrews 😂.
To be fair the system always worked well.
Put your name down send a WhatsApp to say you have joined and normally get a response saying great see you then.
I would prefer that than what happened to Crazyface where they just take there name out and leave you without a game.

Also when the comps were drawn you would always send or receive a WhatsApp if it was someone you hadn’t played with before.

I suppose it was seen as a confirmation rather than gaining permission.

Just the way this club worked, I can understand it may seem weird or different to others that are used to a different system.

This has been the worst winter for us in about 40 years, last qualifying comp. I had was 2nd October last year, but we never have qualifiers in winter.

None of our greens are waterlogged it’s the relentless gales that are the problem for us.

What part of the country are you in? Hope it improves for us shortly.
We are in the West of Scotland and its been a very wet winter I played an away tie earlier and was caked in mud.

If it’s during a roll up I see no difference!

If it’s just a social I’d turn up knowing they had a gap and ask do you mind if I join. How else are new members expected to integrate if people do their upmost to be unwelcoming.
The 1st time I'd have liked to do so, but our booking system doesn't allow that unless you're "friends" - and therefore you have to know the e-mail address in order to become one ... ! 🥴
German privacy policy ! 🤷‍♂️

What do you do if you see a slot available on the morning you want to play, maybe an hour or two before you’d tee off?

Sit and around and wait for a whatsapp or rock up and introduce yourself on the tee?

I would do both.
Can’t see that being a problem.
I know to those not used to it that it sounds weird but it just gives everyone the heads up really.
It didn’t happen very often to me but if it did then I would tell the person we meet in the bar x amount of time before tee off if you want a drink first?

Once I put myself down with someone for a twilight round who messaged me back saying he didn’t know how many holes he was going to play as had the shanks and was trying something different but I was welcome to join him and we had a great afternoon.
If that had been someone needing to get a card marked then they could have been disappointed.
99% of the time it wasn’t a problem and I didn’t ever hear any complaints when I was there.
It helped if you clicked on the players name it gave you email address and phone number so it was very simple, not sure legally you can still do that or not.

Bloody Germans and their efficiency and forcing us to be civilised 😂

This is it for me with bells on as I have couple of issues with it. What if you don’t want to be part of a public WhatsApp group that allows anyone to have your contact number.

I’d much rather someone just pop their name in as is allowed and turn up and politely introduce themselves to me in the 1st tee than receive a random msg on my phone like some kind of Tinder date fo golfers 😂
