Golf Random Irritations

One of the reasons we installed electric gates was, a couple of years ago, 2 guys rolled up in a van, jacked up a car, removed the catalytic converter and legged it in the space of about 45 seconds....

Many clubs have gates before entry where you need a code or have to call reception etc
Never played at one but it seems like a bit of a pointless exercise as a golf course is a big area and you can't control access around the whole perimeter - unfortunately. Lots of courses also have public rights of way across them.

We have a lot of social members , a good number are those family members but also from the local town , the course is close for people to walk too

A lot use it for Sunday lunches and meals during the week
Do they get food & beverage discount for their membership though?
It could make sense financially then if they use the club a decent amount

Was due to play early this morning, which meant having to take the dogs out just as the day was dawning.

The younger one is batshit crazy, charges around non stop. I was walking down a very narrow path in the fields, was keeping an eye on the older one who is stone deaf, when the young one appeared from nowhere, going 100mph, and crashed into the back of my legs. it sent shockwaves right up my back, could hardly walk with the pain. Golf got cancelled, in favour of a long hot bath, painkillers and a heat patch.

I guess this is more of a Dog Random Irritation than a Golf one.

Interesting. Most clubs up here don't have that restriction. Even if they do in theory, it would not be enforced as they want money over the bar.

@rudebhoy @Springveldt can you think of a club that would enforce this? Maybe Northumberland GC. Anywhere else?
Bamburgh Castle GC don’t allow non-golfers in the clubhouse. A real shame as the food there is the best I’ve had at any club up here.

We have a very strong Social Membership. Used for full meals, snacks, drinks, socials etc. Sometimes 50% of Sunday diners or popular socials are Social members. They get catering discounts as do all playing Members but they can't attend AGMs etc and don't have any voting rights.
Casual non-members can use the bar & restaurant in accordance with licensing laws. Occasionally they use the pro shop.
We have a coded exit barrier.

I’m currently in a 3-4 year waiting list to join a top class golf club, we have to pay £75 a year to stay on the list but in the year you actually get in, they refund that year’s £75. It also gets you ‘club membership’ meaning I can use the bar and restaurant if I want. That’s never going to happen but I guess it’s some sort of benefit.

I’m not massively happy to be paying £75 a year, but I understand it’s to weed out the flakey ones and gain some commitment. I also feel it’s worth the additional cost to join the club.

I read this and thought, it depends where it is and, if appropriate, I'd be using the bar, you never know who you'll meet. 😉😉

We've a gate, manned 24 hours by 2-3 security staff so no codes, whole property is fenced with driving and foot patrols all day/ night, external firm takes care of it all
No idea how much of my green fee pays for that though

Not that I can think of. I know at my current club there is a Haven caravan park next door and people from there are more than welcome to go into the clubhouse and buy food/drink from the bar. At my old club anyone could walk in and use the restaurant if they wanted. As you say maybe Northumberland would enforce it as visitors aren't allowed in certain parts, I was always told to use the "spike" bar when there are visitors weren't allowed in the main bar. They are a bit snobby and old fashioned though so would expect it from them.

To be fair only course I’ve ever played where you have to be buzzed in is Queenwood but that’s a whole different kettle of fish. I would say any club that doesn’t let you beyond the gates is pompous and not welcoming.
The reason for the barriers is also to stop Travellers taking over the car park.
It’s happened a lot up here.
They demand a ransom to leave!

Stray cars looking for unattended clubs is another one.!

My club is as friendly as they come but protecting the members cars is important !

I understand closed barriers of an evening out of hours but all day everyday is as welcoming as a kick in the nuts to many people. I’m not saying it’s right either way just how it’s often perceived as good clubs adding another layer of pomposity and being unwelcoming to outsiders.

Our in barrier is automatic when a car pulls up normally.
Exit one is card or buzzer/ number.

It’s only set to card entry when there’s any problems in the area Travellers , or cars looking to Nick clubs.
Sadly the latter is a common thing at clubs here.
The barrier is a security thing sadly but necessary.!

We have 10 parking places before the barrier if the public want to eat or use the bar for social things.
We hire out a meeting room or the whole clubhouse for weddings etc.

Seems reasonable to me and at least there’s additional option outside.
