Golf Random Irritations

I’m currently in a 3-4 year waiting list to join a top class golf club, we have to pay £75 a year to stay on the list but in the year you actually get in, they refund that year’s £75. It also gets you ‘club membership’ meaning I can use the bar and restaurant if I want. That’s never going to happen but I guess it’s some sort of benefit.

I’m not massively happy to be paying £75 a year, but I understand it’s to weed out the flakey ones and gain some commitment. I also feel it’s worth the additional cost to join the club.
If I’m reading this right you pay £75 a year to remain on a list for 4 years so £300 over that period and you only get £75!

Sounds like a licence to print money and a terrible way to treat potential new members. Hope it’s worth it.

I think he also gets use of the bar and facilities for that £75

Which is what we do

You pay £100 a year to be a social member of the club whilst on the waiting list

Yeh, it’s a bit of a social membership. I’ll never use it until I’m a full member, but at least it’s something.

I’m not overjoyed at paying £75 a year, but I can understand it from the club’s point of view, and it’s well worth it.

Do you get many social members? Do you have lots of housing around the course?

I'm amazed people would pay that for social membership of a golf course but then I don't know the geography of the area.

We have a lot of social members , a good number are those family members but also from the local town , the course is close for people to walk too

A lot use it for Sunday lunches and meals during the week

For me that’s still a waste and dead money, I know we all cut our cloth accordingly and VFM is different for everyone but my personal opinion is there is zero value in being a social only member of a golf club but we’re all different.

The social side for me begins with playing a round of golf with others and then going to the bar afterwards for a coffee, bite to eat etc. Even the Sunday lunch would be done after a round with family meeting you there after a round not specifically going there for that but again we’re all different.

That for me is why is see zero value in it, it would never get any use whatsoever so is dead money and can imagine the clubs cashing in on that as I would imagine many don’t use it.

This is one of many reasons I wouldn’t use it, there is not a single club in walking distance to my home, I’d have to drive past one of 2 different town centres to get to the nearest options. Including many better places to sit and go for a coffee, pastry or a host of good pubs and restaurants to get to a club. If I wanted a social pint which is rare I’d walk to the local village so I can enjoy it free from worry of driving which I couldn’t do at a golf club where I live. Of the different clubs I’ve been a member at over the years I’ve never known one that’s a decent amount of social only members.

Wow! Call me narrow-minded, however I would never, ever consider something like that! 😱

For me, a golf club is a place where I can play golf - and nothing else!
I'm definitely not looking for a place to “socialize”!

All I want to do is play golf!

That's why I'm not even a member of a golf club, but prefer to pay green fees each time - and as long as he doesn't play more than 18 holes twice a month (or more than 9 holes four times a month), it's also better value for money ...! 🤷🏽

P. S.: Sorry, I have to correct myself—I *am* a member of a golf club!

However, it's not the one where I play, and it's only so that I can play as a guest on other courses, a so-called “remote membership.” 🤷🏽

The only reason I can see a Social membership being vfm is if you're unable to play anymore but still want the social side with friends you've made over the years....
But, each to their own and if that's what it takes to get into the club you want.......mine's a pint!

Social side of many clubs is still very key , we have lots of events put on for members - guest speakers, family events , quizzes , Gents evenings and even your standard nightly drink and Saturday and Sunday meals - it helps also bring in much needed money.

Our social memberships for those on the waiting list also have a number of rounds at members guest rate

Do you need to be a social member to use the clubhouse for meals, etc? If not, what is the benefit - discounts, etc?

A social member gets the food and drinks discounts

If you aren’t a social member ( or any type of member ) you don’t get the discount - as well as not being able to attend any events

You can’t use the bar etc without being a member ( unless in a private booked function )

I'm slightly confused there. You say you don't get a bar discount without membership but also that you can't use the bar unless you are a member.

I appreciate visiting golfers don't get a discount but otherwise you can only use the bar if you are a member, is that correct? Is that strictly enforced?

What I mean is you can’t just walk off the street and use the club bar etc

And yes it’s enforced

Interesting. Most clubs up here don't have that restriction. Even if they do in theory, it would not be enforced as they want money over the bar.

@rudebhoy @Springveldt can you think of a club that would enforce this? Maybe Northumberland GC. Anywhere else?

You can’t get into the club house without a card or the number from the Pro shop anyway

We only have footfall from local residents who joined the club and those that are social members

Bit elitist and not really welcoming in my opinion. but I suppose your club can afford to be picky as they obviously make enough money charging staff to use the facilities :ROFLMAO: ;)

How is it “elitist” - it’s not a pub or a restaurant

It’s not much different to the social clubs or working men’s clubs or local legion - you join as a member and get the benefits

Blimey, that's serious. I've seen that for back ways into locker rooms but never for the actual club house itself.

Have you had issues with crime? I'm trying to think why you would go to such extreme measures.

It’s always been that way , we do have lots of trophies etc on display but card reader has always been on every external door , and see it at lots of clubs

I’d imagine it’s seen as elitist as to many it would not come across as overly welcoming. Personally that would not cause me any issues as you point out no different to the working men’s club I was brought up in where an old boy would sit at the door to check your little membership book. But can see why some may think it is. !

im agreeing again here bloody hell. Club I was a member at as a junior/intermediate many moons ago had this wasn’t to ward people off as you could still access the club by pressing the buzzer or going in via pro shop. But again can see why some would see it as off putting.
