Golf Random Irritations

Strong winds. I've played 2 opens over the past 2 weekends, at courses I really like, and it's been blowing a gale both times. It hasn't ruined the experience but it has made a it harder work than it should have been.
Although I'm pretty much used to the playing in the wind now I'm getting a bit sick of it. It's great when I'm hitting driver then 8 iron into par 5's but it's crap when I'm hitting driver, 3 wood and chip into some par 4's .

County Golf

Prob could have a list of my irritations about them

Find most who play for our local one and the organisers to be rather arrogant and stuck up with a sense of being above

Many in the “team” look down on our players despite us slapping them in winter and summer scratch comps - most of them think they are pro

But latest irritation

County champs is at our place this weekend - no issues , they have 40 people enter , two rounds in one day - no probs we will give you from 7 until 9 for the first round and then 12 until 2 for the 2nd round - that should also given the paying members the chance to play the course on a prime day

Oh that’s not good enough for the county they want a 2 tee start form 8:30 then from 13:30 as well

So they have ultimately decided to close our whole course for the day for 40 people

There is a reason why I don’t go near the events
Sounds like it's the same here as well.

Opens
Societies
Business days etc bring in “added” income to a club that most require

A competition booking is clearly self explanatory

Weekly or daily fee closures for roll ups of historic specific groups will normally have “unknown” amounts of people so may leave lots of gaps

As is always - some like the roll ups and the ability to just be flexible and turn up if they want

clubs aren’t fan of block booking tee times without them being full
The two rollups I play in at Ripon have very similar numbers every week. It doesn't just flip around from 10 one week to 30 the next. Last Thursday even though it was raining the whole time we had 28.

Yep, things like business days add income to the club.....but it also means you can't play golf that day unless you go elsewhere and hope there is a way they will let you in. The small group I play with at Oakdale usually heads to Scarcroft on those days.....like tomorrow.....and in another 10 days or so. I join a club to play at that club.....getting kicked off on a regular basis is beyond annoying.

Yes, I understand the meaning of competition. We have blocked out 2 days this week for medals. Wed+Sat. But blocking out the days means you can't just play golf....you have to play in the medal....and pay for the privilege. Hense.....the group is going to Scarcroft tomorrow since most of us don't care about playing in comps.

One of my regular playing partners played up at Dunbar last Saturday, looks like conditions must have been tough as he shot 80 and is scratch and a great ball striker. There was a PCC of 1.
Yeah it must have been tough, our 7 time club champion who's off +3 or so but has been +5 recently had a 9 at the 7th in an 81 and the other + h'cap in the field, who was the beaten finalist in last years championship NR'd, the 1 H'cap winner of both scratch & net was off in the first couple of games and probably got most of his round done before the worst of the wind

4 of us use our clubs reciprocal arrangements for a 2 round 1 night away trip each year, we've booked the hotel in the village and asked our office to try and get us 2 times, one on each of their courses. Day 1 time is booked no bother but we have to wait until the next day for the 2nd time as they will only book 7 days in advance, day 2 we're told that we can't get a time as it's fully booked. Could they not have been a wee bit helpful and maybe just for once book both times on day 1, after all our office told them we were looking to play both days, no we can't do that I'm afraid. Thankfully we managed to cancel the hotel and took our business somewhere else (and had a great trip)

We have been given an extensive list of “courtesy rounds” - I’ll use that sarcastically as our friendly clubs in the county have offered a grand total of 2 fourballs on the Saturday and they are both after 3 , and on Sunday a total of 5 fourballs all after 3 PM

I think what that does is now stop us being so generous ( we used to offer 4 slots each day )

And it will also stop us hosting county events again

And the club said yes when it was expected to have significant amount of entries to fill the course
We've got a Ladies County event on at our place today. Course is closed for it, we got around 20 courtesy 4 balls from the clubs taking part. Me and the lads are off to Ponteland this afternoon as a result.

I'll be interested to hear what you think. Huge greens, good greens, but I found the course a bit bland. I expected more.

Will second that. Played in an Open yesterday, wind unbelievable, in a Stableford and several walked off after 9. Winning score from around 160 was 39 points.

Looked this morning and PCC was 3 which is most unusual
The wind is brutal up here just now, thankfully today seems to be the last day for a while where it's gusting to 40+

Agree entirely with LP. The County, or at least some, think they are so special and expect everybody to bow and scrape to them. Another post mentioned about the increase in bar takings but I found there are a lot of “hangers on” looking for freebies. The Greenkeeping staff are in panic mode for the month before hoping for the right amount of sun/ rain.

Our course, especially greens, was in great condition lst year and we hosted The Big 6 along with County Strokeplay and County Ladies over 3 days Bank Holiday weekend. Little revenue through the bar.

County asked again this year for a specific date and The Club declined citing the above which was reasonable

The greens are great, it's a shame the rest of the course is not as interesting. It is all maintained well, I just found tee to green to be very dull.

That about sums up my opinion of it too.
Great greens, always, and quick too.
But the course (design) does nothing for me.
Good member practice facilities, and loads of members, but not for me, even though very local and have mates there

Wouldn’t disagree. Lots of similar holes, straight up, straight back. 17 is the best hole on the course, 18 is a decent finishing hole, but overall a bit boring.

Another niggle, no signage at all on any of the holes, very easy to get lost / play the wrong hole.

A small group of senior fourballs playing some kind of roll-up.
Over the course of 18 holes, they caused several groups behind to walk off using excuses as :-

"We are playing a competition so we don't have to let you through"
"You might as well go in as we are slow"
"We don't have to let you through as you are a single and have no standing on the course"
"We booked these tee times"

And these people live among us and unfortunately still exist on a golf course.

Anyone who still claims a single player has no standing should be booted off the course and never allowed to return. Infuriating idiots.

It's nearly always the seniors. They seem to believe that letting someone through is an insult to their manhood.

Also, contrary to popular myth, I've very rarely been held up by women golfers, they generally seem very considerate / aware.
