Golf Random Irritations

County Golf

Prob could have a list of my irritations about them

Find most who play for our local one and the organisers to be rather arrogant and stuck up with a sense of being above

Many in the “team” look down on our players despite us slapping them in winter and summer scratch comps

But latest irritation

County champs is at our place this weekend - no issues , they have 40 people enter , two rounds in one day - no probs we will give you from 7 until 9 for the first round and then 12 until 2 for the 2nd round - that should also given the paying members the chance to play the course on a prime day

Oh that’s not good enough for the county they want a 2 tee start form 8:30 then from 13:30 as well

So they have ultimately decided to close our whole course for the day for 40 people

There is a reason why I don’t go near the events
Hosting a County Championship is generally thought to be an honour and provides some prestige for the quality of the course.
But don't they make a cash contribution?

Someone just needed to say “no” and repeat the original offer. Or say ‘yes, the fee to hire our course exclusively for 8 hours is…’

Assuming you normally have rather more than 40 people around on a prime summer weekend so there is some significant loss in bar/catering revenue too.

Your irritation should be with your own club who (apparently) have rolled over and let County tickle their tummy.

My County normally get many family & friends of the players who tend to consume more from the bar and kitchen than members.

I can see why they don't want weekend hackers holding up play of the county match. If there is a way to avoid it though members should be able to play on the day

Do you get courtesy at all other courses in the county that day? That was something that used to happen up here in the past, may well do now still, I don't know.

If not, as per some previous posts, your club should simply have said no.

We have been given an extensive list of “courtesy rounds” - I’ll use that sarcastically as our friendly clubs in the county have offered a grand total of 2 fourballs on the Saturday and they are both after 3 , and on Sunday a total of 5 fourballs all after 3 PM

I think what that does is now stop us being so generous ( we used to offer 4 slots each day )

And it will also stop us hosting county events again

And the club said yes when it was expected to have significant amount of entries to fill the course

This is controversial… doing away with ladies day .. ours is fixed Thursday mornings and no male access.
I don’t think it’s required given the ladies have access to all competitions and tee times throughout the week.
Personally I would prefer to minimise weekly roll ups and open the club to a free for all or give 7 day membership preferences.. so when I do get an opportunity I can go and play.

I agree to extent

But I also think it’s ok for clubs to have comps for ladies as well as seniors etc

I've never really understood this thinking. The clubs block days/times for Opens, Medals, business days, large visiting parties, team comps of various natures, comps for ladies/youths etc etc....but if they block a time period for a rollup that's just unacceptable? If people really wanted a "free for all" for the membership, there should be NO blocked times I would think.

How big is the ladies section at your place? Ours take about 4-5 slots at the most

Opens
Societies
Business days etc bring in “added” income to a club that most require

A competition booking is clearly self explanatory

Weekly or daily fee closures for roll ups of historic specific groups will normally have “unknown” amounts of people so may leave lots of gaps

As is always - some like the roll ups and the ability to just be flexible and turn up if they want

clubs aren’t fan of block booking tee times without them being full

One wasn't at Dunbar was it, the Open was there on Saturday and it must have been very windy, at least later on, I spent the afternoon in Berwick-upon-Tweed and it was blowing a hoolie
One of my regular playing partners played up at Dunbar last Saturday, looks like conditions must have been tough as he shot 80 and is scratch and a great ball striker. There was a PCC of 1.
