My index is 17.0, I've been between 16 and 19 for years, I am a 16-19 handicapper.Really hit home how stupid our course ratings are now and how difficult it's going to be to get my handicap down to a decent level - played really well, shot 83, but that's come back as 17.3 score differential.(It used to be 15.8 which is bad enough.)
However, I've worked out that if my handicap was only based on the twelve rounds at my 'home' course, I'd be 23.9. It's short but it's not easy and yet the slope is only 106 and the course rating is 3.6 under par. It's impossible to score well there unless you play there all the time and accept that your handicap will creep inexorably up. Luckily I only play there about six times a year, it's 'home' in name only. Players who have handicaps based solely at that club must be devastating when they play team opens!
