Golf Random Irritations

I heard that Grims Dyke had lots short par fours around 300 yards where you need to hit a long iron or hybrid off the tee then a wedge. Not many holes where driver is the best option.
'Lots' is a stretch, but there are three par 4s where I hit 3 wood off the tee as driver isn't required and only brings in potential trouble on the right. They are around the 300 mark. For anything 330+ though I'm hitting driver because I'd rather be hitting a short iron or wedge for my approach than a long iron. I hit driver 10 times on a typical round, that includes the longest par 3, two par 5s and seven par 4s. Arguably I could hit 3 wood on the 5th as it's 320-ish, but there are bunkers to carry at around 150 so I'd rather fly them easily with driver than risk a poorly-struck 3 wood dropping in there.

I don’t want to play your course via the internet, but 2, 5, 13, 17 and 18 are all under 330 yards so that’s at least 5 short par fours where someone could maybe hit a long iron off the tee and have a wedge in. I understand the strategy to hit driver and give yourself a shorter approach. Scratch golfers would be trying to drive these holes.

Obviously I could be talking rubbish if these holes are uphill and into the wind.

2nd, 17th and 18th are indeed the holes where I hit 3 wood. There would be no point hitting a long iron, my longest iron is a 6 and I don't hit it any better than a hit the 3 wood so why give up the distance? And at this time of year that leaves me a 7/8 iron in instead of a wedge. Not seeing the benefit there. 5th as I mentioned is the one where I want to be sure of carrying the fairway bunkers. 13th is uphill so plays a little longer than the yardage. If you're like a low-single player who hits a long way then sure, you probably are hitting a long iron off the tee for all five of those. I'm not. 😅

Summer knocker competitions have been announced.. one off scratch the other is for hcps 14.9 and above .. which then leaves me thinking any one from 5-14.9 hasn’t got any chance.
But this didn’t last long as I reminded myself it’s an utter ball ache organising games!

Don’t the club have a major handicap KO for all ?

That’s very strange

We have a Club KO open to all

Scratch

Then a “mid HC” KO for 10-20 Hcs

High HC KO for 20 plus

The mid HC KO was created because they said there wasn’t a KO for them - even though the 10-20 group win the main club one
Yes I looked everywhere reread the criteria for the singles knock outs ..

I would choose whatever club(s) reduced my average score, determined by experimenting. Reducing penalty strokes/chip outs per round would be considered.

Buying a 2nd hand demo iron to try the shaft with another head, idly trying the club "just to see", loving it so much that you really want to get a set and...
Not being able to find any....... 😫

Not just scratch ones my friend, us crap ones too.

I actually played with a +1 handicapper round my place once. It was quite funny how different he played it. All those holes where I hit 3 wood, he was hitting driver to try and drive the green, and most of the holes where I hit driver he was hitting 4 iron. Different game! 😂
