Had a message from a long time member of this forum who has never posted on here.

He had a question about something I'd posted.

He never posts on here as the atmosphere is often too niggly.

The irritation is that I wasn't in a position to disagree.
It's why I rarely post these days.......

I'm not sure there was ever a halcyon time of happiness and friendly chat throughout. There have always been people who snap, who niggle, who wont let go. The problem is that most of the time those people don't actually break forum rules. They might be annoying, they might drain joy from the forum but they don't give a clear reason to kick them out.

My own solution is to block these people out. I don't have anyone on ignore, I just brush over their posts and mentally ignore them 99% of the time.

It's the same with any online forum, they are just a selection of people from everyday life after all. They walk amongst us 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, this. I never understand why people are so sensitive and can't just gloss over the people they think are talking rubbish. Just laugh it off. Nothing we say or do on here matters.

Losing your swing entirely on the course and knowing you're swinging wrong, but not being able to correct until you can suddenly hit the ball well on the last two holes

Could it be you stopped caring on those last 2 holes? I know I've played some of my best rounds when I've had a disastrous start.

My best round this year was a 78 (9 over) that started double, triple, bogey. Then I just relaxed and didn't overthink it and went level through the next 13 holes before realising I was on for a good score again and fluffing the last two holes 🤣.

Most probably. See my post in the "I played today and..," thread for a more in-depth analysis 😂

There are definitely a few niggly ones on here, to some people I may well be one of those, but I find that there's a vast majority of decent folk.
I still love this place.

Played in the Captains Drive In on Sunday. Had a terrible warm up and in Hosel City and everything (including 13 on the trot) going right. Fortunately it was a team event but randomly drawn teams. Played awfully and I hit 1 tee shot I was pleased with but had zero expectations and resigned to the team doing the work with 3 scores from 4 counting. I was only hitting driver 180 yards or so but straight and simply took two more clubs than the yardage and swung trying not simply make a solid contact

We won (on countback) but I'd had 44 points with my own ball playing ugly. It was a masterclass in ugly, dirty golf not worrying about the how.

I've been listening to a lot of Karl Morris podcasts and ugly golf often comes up in various guises and although I wasn't consciously thinking about what I heard, funny how the brain absorbs information and can act on it sub-consciously. I was getting the maximum return on very little talent on the day

Must be nice - I managed 21 points.

In all seriousness though, that's really good, and just grinding it out when playing badly is something I need to get better at, especially in the winter. It will never cease to surprise me how one week I can shoot 5 or 6 over through 9, and a few weeks later I shoot 30 over thru 18

What the hell? Have I read that right? If you scored 44 points why not just play that way all the time? Your handicap would come down about 7 shots!

Don't get me wrong I was as amazed as anyone when the guy marking the card added it up. It was horrible and no real idea what to do over the ball or even where it was going to go (other than not hitting the rights) but shows what acceptance and using shots can do. Our 17th is a par 3 (we started on the 7th as a shotgun) and played 181 to the back flag. I hit a 5 wood and thinned it but it ran all the way and got onto the green. Two putts and walking off with 3 points. That sort of day. Thing was I was making fun of it almost and not stressing about the bad swing

Not particularly random really, but the topic of prices at top courses bubbled up in one of the chats yesterday (as it usually does a few times a year). The prices at some courses are absolutely mental. Checked a few ones for next year just for fun:

Sunningdale - £350 (or the option of a real bargain to pay £600 to play 36 holes in one day)
Royal St George's - £330
Turnberry - £495

World has gone mad. Yes, yes - I know that there are deals to be had playing in the off-season etc, that it's not a god given right to be able to play all the courses you want and all that. Just find it a bit sad on a personal level to know I'll most likely never going to play a lot of the courses that I've read and seen so much about. And I very much doubt that it will go in any other direction than becoming even more expensive than that.
