We were looking for his ball in the first cut, couldn't see it. He walked back away from me about 25 yards and I saw a ball in his right hand.

He bent over with his right hand and said, here it is. I thought I don't believe he did that, and I thought did I really see that. Then I thought what if I was wrong?

He has a bit of a rep for similar. He's a regular playing partner and I just blooming bottled it. I know he's taking the pee, its my fault for not saying something....

Don't beat yourself up about it.
Many of us would have done exactly the same as you, myself included.
As he's a regular playing partner I'd definitely mention to him that he was spotted doing what he did and see what his reaction is.
Then decide whether he'll remain as a regular playing partner.

Yeah rather than shop him immediately maybe I'd have a quiet word with him and see if he denied or it admitted it first.

A guy in our four ball getting arsey as he didn’t know the rules when going OOB and thinking he could drop where the ball went over the white line

Seriously, try not to beat yourself up too much about this. I've had the exact same issue with a regular partner who unfortunately for me also happened to be very popular and well thought of within the club, over a period of time I witnessed some very questionable actions and decisions from this individual. I've been fuming about it when I got home but I knew if I raised the issue it would just make my life and time around the club so much harder

Yes, this is really tricky. At my previous club there was a guy who was a former captain, president, chairman and genuinely did loads of good things for the club.
Whenever he was in the rough, he always picked up his ball to "identify it", and when he replaced it, it ended up in a much better lie. He also had a very dubious way of marking his ball on the green which looked like some kind of magician's sleight of hand.
Loads of people were aware of it, but his standing in the club made it pretty much impossible to challenge.

I play socially with a guy who does both of those things.

Biggest problem with witnessing any kind of cheating...you have to be 1000% sure...
This is the answer, You see something, then you think about it and you start to doubt yourself. Did I really just see that, could I be mistaken? Then the moment is gone.

I've said stuff before, but it has always been spontaneous. Any element of doubt because of the situation and the moment is lost.

No rule. But I understand the sentiment. It won't happen again. I think I was so shocked I just stood there
Things like that I keep in the back pocket. He won’t change and when you do challenge him. You can always drop out that you were sure you had seen him do it before.

For @IanM - you know him so maybe now a quiet word in his ear saying you think you saw something happen in the first cut rough on the 18th that you didn’t understand, and that if it had been seen by another might have caused him to be asked difficult and embarrassing questions.

That sounds like Ian is telling the guy that he's happy to go along with dodgy behaviour but others might not be so accommodating. :D

All you need to do when saying it is give the guy a good look in the eyes, maybe also saying that as you were confused you didn’t ask…but others might be less reticent.

No golf for me over the weekend, the brook that runs across our course flooded to levels never seen before and left the course with areas that were totally impassable.

Was really looking forward to the Greensomes comp too!

Course closed on Saturday, just as I arrived in the car park. Frustrating for the people already out there who had to walk in, frustrating for people like me who had already made their way to the club. What doubled my frustration was that I was feeling good about my swing and I went down to the range and flushed every single shot just to confirm it. I won't play for 2 weeks now, I bet the feeling will be gone the next time I pick up a club.
