Golf Random Irritations

Schoolboy error, never try out a playing partner or friends putter,
Actually I was just in American Golf haha. I've never had a mallet style putter at all, because I've always preferred blades (albeit wide blades) to look down at. But I do wonder if a mallet like the spider would stay on line better. And the face on the Spider has similar horizontal grooves to my EvnRoll.

Not really an irritation - though kind of...speaking with our Head Greenie this aftenoon with the rain pouring down - he was as downcast as the weather was overcast and wet...reflecting upon the amount of rain falling and that had fallen over the weekend - another inch plus. He desperately needs a period of dry weather so that he can evaluate how things are going with the re-turfed areas of fairway on three holes and for the seeding on the re-modelled ground to take hold and not get washed away by the torrential rain.

Some will still blame flooded areas on the relatively small amount of tree felling we've had done over the last few years.

I have had similar thoughts regarding the larger square heads but resist giving them a go and stick with my blade.

Caddied today, 5 hour round. Nice enough guys but shouldn't have played from the back tees that's for sure. I convinced them to let's a few groups through, but the two four balls in front from their party didn't. Felt sorry for the single visitor we let through on the 4th didn't get any further than that and it took him5 hours too🙄

Where was that then Patrick? Nairn? Were they Shermans?

Last year I arranged a mini trip for 5 golfers. We had a great time, easy to arrange, lovely. This year it's like herding cats 😠.

It might not happen at this rate, a hissy fit may kick in........

There's a four-ball matchplay competition at my club where they have an auction for all the pairs that have entered - if the pair wins then those that purchased them get a payout. Like a gambling thing I guess. Then in the words of one of the emails I got, "Winning bidders must also offer the purchased pair the opportunity to purchase a 50% stake in themselves." Me and my partner went for £80 - same fee as we did the year before. Last year we did not take the opportunity to buy half of our stake (turned out to be a wise decision as we lost in the first round!). I was still debating whether to do it or not this year when I received a message:

"Hi Olly our syndicate bought you and your partner so you need to pay for your half which is £40 between you."
My response was I'm pretty sure it's optional. His reply to that? "I know it's optional but it's always been the done thing to do."

Ah. That old chestnut of golf clubs everywhere. If there was a phrase he could have picked to make me not want to do something, then I think he just found it. Feeling much more inclined to pass on this 'opportunity' now.

I'd have asked, "what if we'd gone for £1,000, would we still be expected to pay half then?"

Ridiculous idea and I definitely wouldn't be paying half.
Some of the teams did go for £210, think that was the highest. Imagine being stung for 50 quid because it's "the done thing". 😄

The best way for a “done thing” to cease being one is for people to stop falling into line simply because it might be easier doing so.

Really grinds my gears when I hear people trotting such garb out. The opening email clearly says “offer the purchased pairs the opportunity….” Anyone putting pressure on members to purchase a share in themselves because it’s “the done thing” should wind their necks in.

🤬

Glad it wasn't just me who thought that. 😄

it’s the same sort of comp that we have. Most buy a percentage of themselves but don’t have too. Always the chance you run the risk of winning then get none of the winnings - could be a big load of money you miss out on.

I honestly think I'd be happy enough to win that I wouldn't worry too much about that. If I played golf for money I'd be poor and hungry by now. 😄 Of course you're right it is a bit of a risk I guess. I'm just not used to backing myself, can only end in disaster.

You’re also adding pressure on yourself. You’re playing golf for fun not money.

I know the amount is immaterial but I don’t like playing for money.

I'm confused. You appear to be describing the winter 4-ball at Grims Dyke. Why is the auction happening in May?
Have they introduced a summer version?

PS. Many years ago, a pair that were new members entered the winter 4-ball and never knew about their option to buy their half.
Imagine how gutted they were when they won and the people who had bought them (for a song) pocketed all the winnings - which if you weren't aware is a seriously significant amount of money.

It's the Inwards Four-ball - I think they've maybe just moved it to summer and swapped it with the Begbie Foursomes? I'm not sure as I've only played it once before and that was last year.

We might still pay it, haven't decided yet, it was just his attitude that put me off. And as @sunshine said, I play for fun not money really.

OK, the Inwards was always the winter 4-ball, and it is the big money comp at GDGC.

If they've swapped it with the Begbie foursomes, that doesn't make sense. The whole point of the winter 4-ball was to encourage people to continue playing competitive golf through the winter, and the big prize pot was part of the incentive. If someone isn't that interested in winter golf, I don't see how a foursomes without the potential of a big prize is going to change their minds. But I've been away from the club for over 2 years now, so who am I to question things?
