Golf club websites

I understand what you mean Leftie. But in this day and age of internet and the worldwide web who wouldn't take a look at the clubs site?

Sure I've been on corporate days to unfamiliar courses, like I said, the first thing I do is check out their site. I don't steadfastly study the scorecard or strokesaver. I don't ponder the menu to see what I'll be getting to eat. I do look at the course pictures and generally browse the site just to see what the course I'll be playing looks like.

On a similar note. If I were looking for a different course to play I have to say a shoddy website would make me consider choosing an alternative course. :)

You guys seem to want the club to have someone at the course updating their web site from 1st light onwards.

It's a simple request, the website for my club that I've built has a facility for the greenkeeper/official to send a text from their phone which will automatically be placed on the website with the course update/competition on/off etc.
No more 20 odd phone calls to see if the place is open after a little bit of rain.

Once again it comes down to money...if I wasn't doing this for free, I'd charge upwards of £1000 to set up, and that's just a basic off the shelf CMS system.

Not really, sure most pro shops arnt even open from first light either so you couldnt even phone in that early.

The only things I'm bothered about initially is seeing the course guide. If that interests me I'll look for prices pictures, then only if I'm going to play it I'll have a look round the rest of the site.

Same as that.

I'm not going to decline playing the course because their web site is rubbish

But I might well do if the aforementioned website showed pictures of 18 holes in all their staked tree and marker post glory.
I do like to see lots of trees and manicured fairways.

;)

I've been scouting local clubs sites looking at membership rates for 2011, none of them state a price, this has led me to a few thoughts

A) everyone is paying different price
B) new members are getting special deals that old members don't get
C) it's top secret and they cant tell you.

This is crap really, the whole idea of a site is to "sell" the club but if you don't know what your paying effectively a good percentage of the sites may as well just have a contact us page and that's it.

A membership 'tyre kicker' perhaps?!

If you were half serious you would pop in, ring them up and then they can tell you all you need to know (the 'hard' sell) an maybe even offer you a taster round or even a deal....

Quite the opposite, i was looking to see rough prices of clubs to see if I could short list that club or not. Around here memberships can range from 1000 to 2500, i I was to pop into every club within a 10 mile radius it would take 2/3 weeks alone as there must be 20 plus clubs within 10 miles of me.

Clubs stating prices would have allowed me to short list clubs without wasting peoples time and mine on clubs that were out if my price range

Have you tried EGU Golf Central thingy - quite a lot of the ones that need members post up their fees there....

Unfortunately, where you live most of the decent clubs probably don't want/need you to join anyway....(no offence meant btw)....

I like ours, nothing to flash and fancy, but the course guide is decent and shows decent pictures.

Pictures of the course is normally the first thing i go for, then the "visitors information" to see how much it would et me back.

I went through this exercise a couple of months ago. I trawled the websites first then sent the same email with the same questions to each of them that might have interested me.

Its the 21st century Leftie, the age of the phone only is gone, multimedia is the current fad and being able to see the course (even if the photos were taken on the one great day of the year) helps you see what you are in for if you have either never played or want to know dress codes, facilities and prices. Remember, websites are ways of releasing information to the masses, not one or two guys.
I can imagine that this cuts the amount of unnecessary calls into the club by quite a bit.

Yeh, Yeh Brendy. I know I'm a bit of a luddite but I have embraced the brave new world and, sadly, find it a bit of a disappointment at times. :(

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for clubs having web sites to promote themselves and if they have a good site then well done them. However, being a bit long in the tooth now, I would never make a decision on the quality of a course based on the quality of their web site, pretty pictures (have a look at the Lydd Golf Club site - course looks interesting), information on dress code, etc.

I would be playing a new to me course because it's a club match, I'm playing with mates/Forum members, an invite from a member, with friends on a recommendation, etc. I'm not going to turn down the game because their web site may be pants. And why would you want to know dress code? It's basically the same everywhere apart from a couple of council p & p courses around Croydon and Bromley that I know of.

I'm sure that our head greenkeeper doesn't want to have to start sending text messages to the software every morning and possibly a few times during the day so our club has an answerphone message put on by a greenkeeper or other staff member at about 7.15 am with info about course condition, trolleys/buggies allowed, possible temp greens, etc. This is easily updated as and when necessary through the day and only takes a few seconds to do. The last thing I want to do at that time of day is to faff about with my computer, logging on to the club site, etc.

But if you don't know the info line number, you will find it on the club website  :D :D

Our web site is OKish I suppose with general info for the masses but is (at the moment) only sparsely furnished with pretty pictures so I wouldn't expect Forumers to come and play it on that basis. I think that we get by on reputation. It is however very good for the members with dissemination of information from competition bookings, results, handicaps, various committee minutes etc.,and saves the club a lot of money every year in saved postage costs.

I know almost all if the p&p courses are struggling so I can only assume the others are to. I have spoken to two via telephone and once your on the phone they can't do enough for you, it's just a shame their sites aren't as useful
