Must say the thought of Stableford entices me as a noob. I would've hated to drive all that way, and with my form be out on the first tee.

I like the name of the winner being a King, No Other Better.

I have thought a lot about this and May is just too crazy a time for me next year to get fully involved in the comp. I'm happy to organise the Scotland regional event again, (I'm already thinking Dukes or Eden :p) if others from the region want me to.

So, we need some people to put their names in the hat, as many as we can get.

Please let me know if:

A) you're interested in taking overall control of the competition (as an individual or as part of a committee)
B) you're interested in running a regional event either on your own or with help from others.

I'm up for that. If you need help with it I'd be happy to chip in, St Andrews is on my doorstep so wouldn't be much trouble.

Id be interested in playing again, but I wouldn't make the 6 hour round trip to play the Eden, though I'm sure its nice.

Have we ever run a type of competition where we nominate rounds in advance at our home courses (Comps only of course) Best 5 scores over a summer wins? Could be done for medals or stablefords separately.

Could easily nominate rounds in a knockout format too best stableford or gross score goes through OR do a matchplay comparison between the two cards.

No-one needs to know you are playing two competitions at once ;)

I actually enjoyed it being a medal format. Lets be honest all the other GM meets tend to be stableford and this made a pleasant change. It was equally enjoyable in my opinion (and the group I was in were top notch partners to play with). Even more fun trying to scatter the group in front!!!

Obviously I'll go with the majority decision but as a one off event I'd prefer it to stay as a medal

Mate, I've said Id happily help out if there were 5/6 people like a commitee sorting it all out.

For the record I dont care if it's medal or stableford, i'll go with the flow.

As for the final, last year it was sorted by Mike wasn't it (?) so we had to go with that no matter where it was. If he was to kindly do the same for us again this year we'd not have any control over the venue so putting the final 'on tour' wouldn't be possible, instead we'd have to go with the locations Mike can wangle for us. This needs to be discussed.

If I remember right it was only the first 2 groups playing medal (each regions champ) the majority of us played stableford, it wasn't even like we where waiting on every hole. Just the course and weather both it tandem were brutal.

As a relative newbie I'm just happy to be playing new courses, and all that comes with a meet. So tell me where and when and pull the format out of a bag and I'll see you there regardless

Must have just been our group then, we waited on every single hole. We even had time for a lie down at the halfway house and still caught the group ahead before the 12th. 5 and half hours wasn't fun especially with a 3.1/2 hour drive home to follow it.

I would go stableford, the next decision is whether it is full, 7/8th or 3/4 handicap. Personally i would go for 3/4.

Remind us all of your hc again ;)

3/4 of 8hc is 6 - 3/4 of 20hc is 15, is that fair to the 20hc (although I agree you should not need more than a shot a hole ;) )?

3/4 hc is always brought up by low men, 7/8 or full would be fairer IMO

Try my 7 hour drive home from last year and I only played with one forumer at Hillside so I felt proper miffed :mmm:

.

Dave, if it's early in the year then take it to the links. You'll get a good deal at Dundonald and people will travel for it, also in the area is Barassie, Glasgow Gailes and Western Gailes (possibly the best links on the west coast) who may just do you a deal (we had a plus 4's outing at Western on the same day as the KOK last year for £50).

I'd avoid the Dukes early in the year, it's a nice layout but will be no better than your average parkland course condition wise.

I've no complaints on the drive but would also feel a tad miffed playing with no forumers. Who did you play with.

I played with guys at Hillside i'd played with and met umpteen times.

No I don't mind the drive, I combined it with work so my cost outlay was minimal. I can't remeber the forumer I played with but two visitors two. I'd rather know that I was travelling a long way to play with fellow forumers.

Not so good, I should add that although I knew who I was playing with it wasn't necessarily a good thing, although Gaz is a nice fella

As others have said I think it would be great if this could made into an annual event and gain momentum year on year but the biggest stumbling block is organising the thing.
I thought Virtuocity did a fantastic job pulling it all together last year. The initial idea sounded good with the regionals then final, but bringing it all together on the final day at a venue like Hillside when you put it in perspective was pretty special IMO.

I think medal suits the better Golfers and gets the blood pumping more but realistically Stableford would be the better option all round.
Just an idea to get it off the ground if we were struggling for regional organisers..
Pick a singles open in each designated area and work it off that.
Finals day.. I'm sure Theres some members of some decent clubs that could put something on the table.

Oh, and definately keep it forum only. I think we'd all be walking away slightly gutted after the final if Johns mate Steve off 27 walked away with the trophy after scoring 46pts with a set of titleist blades in his bag;)

I think medal qualifier is fair enough just to filter out any chancers then 7/8ths Stableford for the final imo.

People travelling for the final wont need a week off then. It was a long day for me last year and I only live round the corner :D

I think that if you travel three hours for a regional medal event, start with a 10 it might turn into a miserable day.;) I assume we will be playing in winter months again, so weather could be bad, so would be good to keep moving. Perhaps the final could be medal ?

3/4 handicap should filter out any chancers, and make it more attractive to lower handicaps. I think that is what Trilby Tour do, and high handicaps still seem to do ok. I am sure we have no bandits on the forum though.

We had a forum meet at Blackmoor a few years ago, 40 odd players and played 7/8 handicap. Best score was 36 points from memory, so that seemed to work ok, so worth considering as well.

I personally wouldn't travel to play in a medal

7/8 Stableford would be very workable IMO
