Our 13 hole winter league started this weekend , there is a €5 entry fee this year (aswell as weekly charge of €5) they say its to encourage ppl to play in it & not just not show up if they are one one of the teams .
.
I told them they are charging the many that do turn up . to entice the few that dont , they are not interested . one member suggested you pay €20 to sign up & if you play the first 5 rounds (of 10) the next 4 are paid for outa that €20 , so the incentive is there to play . but NO

Anyhow on to 1st round last weekend , lovely day SAT after alot of rain Thur & Fri , 1 temp green & placing every where , all good .
Rains all Sun night & Sun morn but no temp green on Sunday , ?? no big deal TBH

People go out on Sun in horrible conditions , wind & Rain because its Winter League .. a good few removed their names & didnt play ..

Email this morning , due to low turn out Round 1 of WL is cancelled & will now be played 14th & 15th which originally was left a blank weekend to facilitate those that wanted to partake in the Captains Drive out this Sat but couldnt play on Sat & Sun

They just seem to be doing what they like when they like & sod the members , course is close to home & is decent course . members are sound but committee seem to be doing what they like

The committee should be there to serve you.
You are the paying customer.
If you're not happy with what the committee are doing, tell them either verbally or through a formal letter/email/AGM.

Hi Bob yea i have emailed the club , but i know im wasting my time , if the members werent so nice & its a good course 7mins from home 3 min from work id be gone

They just seem to think they can make or reverse decisions as they feel is ok , without consideration to members ..

get yourself elected to the committee.that way you can have a say in how the club is run .there are probably many members feeling as you do ,and just like you they might have a moan but thats it ,you want change ,get on the job.
dont take this as a dig ,but in many clubs i have been a member of ,be it golf fishing ,cricket and football the only way is to be part of the running of the club .

Scrapping a comp due to lack of entries is just ridiculous
But quite typical of the attitude at some clubs

1st or 2nd club comp ( midweek ) that I entered this year at my club, same thing happened.
Results never materialised
No handicap changes
So I asked the Pro, comp scrapped due to poor turnout ( 10-11 ) , made a non qualifier, and just a sweep
I told him the club couldn't do that and went to see secretary
Got no joy
I asked for a refund, was asked why..??.....because you didn't win....??
No.....because I pay my entry to get a cut or a 0.1 lift only, play each comp for handicap, not sweep money

Was wasting my time

On our handicap committee, we receive correspondence from members and it always get discussed.

We have tinkered, changed many things based on e-mails and letters into us. Some things have stayed the same, but it always gets discussed, and even for things that we dont change, we always write back to them with our thinking and decisions. Sometimes they are not aware of certain reasons, or accept the decision willingly once other things are pointed out to them, or alternate viewpoints are given. I'm not saying all handicap committee's are good, or as willing for change, though.

The main thing for the committee is to try to look at it for fairness of the majority of members/competitors, but it's not always possible, but they should at least tell you their thinking/reasons for it.

Get a few like minded individuals to start a sweep and/or a winter eclectic comp. Spread the word and people will be desperate to place in rather than what is on offer.

Pay a euro or two each week to enter. 5 euro for a 13 hole winter comp is not something that I would contribute towards.
