I pretty much wear shorts from March to Oct to play golf in. the last few times ive played my legs have been bitten to buggery by some sort of insect!!!

Ive not felt any of the bites or seen the culprits, anyone else had this????

Lasts couple of times its been pretty windy on the links, its surprised me they would still be beasties about!

I gave up wearing shorts a good few years ago mainly for this reason....had one horsefly bite too many and called it a day!

Also, after seeing a mate wearing a bright yellow top covered in blackfly I usually go for dark colours too (black mostly) as insects are basically programmed to be attracted to brightly coloured things. Seems to work as I now only get the odd one when a few years ago I'd have bites every time I went on the course.

yellow is a favourite for attracting insects.

I am the same at my home course, there is a stream that runs along the 6th and 7th that attracts horse flies. Every time i wear short, i get bitten on the back of the leg. I stopped wearing shorts last year!!! nasty little things they are!!

the little beasts get me through trousers too so makes no odds for me......

plus I react to them badly. so some jungle formula will be going in the bag & applied before each & every round regardless where it is

If I wear shorts I now cover my legs in insect repellent after a rather nasty experience at Seacroft when I ended up riddled with bites

Always had success with the brand called Jungle Formula, which is a Deet based thing. Seemed to work especially well with horse flies, in the days when I was coaching my boys' football teams I could guarantee that if I remembered the spray on training nights I was fine, forget it and I would get at least one bite.

I've recently heard a lot of people saying good things about the repellent called Incognito, got a bottle here but not had a chance to try it yet. No Deet, for people wanting slightly fewer chemicals in their lives.

Problem with deet is that it can attCk rubber / plastics.

Be very careful as I now have some expensive sun glasses with a permanent finger print smudge on the lens and also the handle of my leki walking stick is a right mess so I guess golf grips could suffer also.

That's why I put it on before I leave the house and make sure I wash my hands.

Try wearing tights :)

It's either cover up or wear insect repellant or move away from midgeland
Or play with someone who smells and wears yellow, then you'll be safe :)

Another one to recommend Avon "Skin So Soft"...

that was muted up here a few years ago to keep Midges away, i don't know anyone that thought it worked, other that to give you a lovely complexion.

Its not midges at Nairn, thats more a west coast /inland problem.

must be cleggs or sand flies, wore long trousers last night for a tie and that was ok but prefer shorts
