General Play/ Supplementals

Hypothetical question, do golf clubs have to have a policy to process supplementary cards? Is it optional?

Are there clubs out there that don't offer this facility?

Supp cards or not something that clubs can refuse to do. Mind you when you read stuff on here about handicaps I wonder.

Supp cards done at other clubs are done at home club as they have no facility to enter other clubs player records. This is not to be confused with players playing in Qs at other clubs.

Is accepting scores optional. It shouldn't be and clubs are encouraged to accept all away scores.

Do you keep these cards and take them into account at the annual review?
.
They shouldn't be. They are not qualifying scores. They may be being returned because the player got a score that satisfied the result he wanted. ie 0.1 or a nice reduction. The payer has to declare his intent beforehand.

It's a crying shame that the rules don't allow h/secs to cut peoples handicaps when they play good golf, especially when we hear so many stories about bandits.

Are there really that many bandits though? Also thought you can be cut for general play.

Only if you declare the card before you play and have the card signed by both of your great grandparents.

Your HC is a reflection of your ability under qualifying comps

For far too long people had HCs that didn't reflect their ability and struggled regulary because they were cut on one off rounds out with their mates

The systems is now in place and whilst nothing is ever perfect we now have a good framework and guidelines to work towards.

If people believe they should be at a lower HC then they just need to go out and prove it - sign a book and then play.

Hopefully we all play good golf at one time or another. You cannot run a sensible handicap system if you only consider the good rounds.

Does anyone on here have experience with the HandicapMaster player entry for enterring supplementary scores? I am looking to switch this on but would be grateful for any feedback on how well this system works.

I've used HM software for a few years now but only recently moved to a new club that uses the player entry part of the system, although they don't yet have a process (manual or otherwise) for processing supplementary scores.

I understand the situation regarding away scored in qualifying competitions - seems most find their way home!

I also understand the position as discussed on away supplementary scores being very difficult to police / verify etc.

The away scores that always bother me are society days where a competition is held - virtually always under qualifying conditions - but the scores are never returned to the home club. The excuse I often hear is "no CSS was calculated so the card isn't valid" but is this the case? Surely the SSS is the default in these cases.

There are several people I know who play in loads of these society days - often for serious prizes - but the scores never come back and there handicaps stay artificially high.

Unless the 'society' has a licence from the national union (exceedingly unlikely), they are not authorised to run qualifying competitions.
Nor can supplementary scores be returned in such circumstances.

Some 'societies' have a reputation of running fast and loose with 'local rules'.
The authorities posit that Clubs have properly organised and competent competition committees (I know, I know!).

A competent (honourable) society committee will send winning scores to the member's club.

Otherwise known as sandbagging.
