Playing with a scratch golfer today and I got on to the discussion of custom fitting. He said he got custom fitted a few years ago for irons and said they were the worst irons he ever had. He now plays standard irons of the shelf. He states that when getting custom fitted the analyse your best shot and swing at all times, and don't allow for poor shots and therefore it's not worth getting fitted especially mid to high handicapers . I kind of agreed with him at the time, but what is everyone else's opinion

Ps this guy could play golf

I got fitted when i was playing like a proper weekend chomping warrior. fitter said, well now we have seen your worst, will work to that, and he was bang on. the biggest improvement for me is my bad shots are no where near as bad as they used to be! and the good shots, i feel like justin rose! LOL

He could have a point - though that wouldn't be a good way to fit! I had a fitting that didn't work out - but that was at least 80% my fault!

You can't buy new Ping clubs without getting (statically) fitted - which is free, so it gives an indication of what some OEMs think of fitting.

Always pays to get a set checked to ensure they match though. I had my eyes opened when simply loft and lie were adjusted to me. My 'least liked' club suddenly became my 'most liked' one!

Some good players simply unconsciously adjust too.

Did that player go back and use the fitter's warranty/guarantee? I believe there should always be one!

I asked what they were he said mizuno jpx25 and now gone back to ping of the shelf G25, before custom fitted he played g10s

So he has really been fitted every time - and the Mizzie one wasn't success.

Interesting to see a Scratch player playing 'GI' irons! :mmm:

I got Ping fitted the other week, so a "semi" fitting I guess! I would say that my bad shots are still bad (maaaybe slightly not as bad) but with my good shots, I feel they are a fair bit better (as in straighter and longer).

At the end of the day, my swing is what stops me playing well, not the metal sticks I hold, but the new clubs definitely let me appreciate a good shot even more! Whether it is the same % of good to bad shots as before, who knows!

That's what he plays and played mate

Also how can he be fitted each time if he walked into the pro shop and got them?

I really must ask, did the pro or assistant hold a gun to your mates head. Knowone twisted his arm to buy the clubs. If you see the club performance and your happy with it then you will buy it. If someone is in any doubt then he or she should walk away and think about it.

Custom fitting is about getting the right club to suit you. Not I want ping, or taylormade, try as many different clubs in different brands till you find something fitted that really works. Pros and local golf stores will allow you to demo and may even custom fit for free?

Fitting is well worth it, if done correctly.

Something to add is that a fitting is only as good as the swing you have that day.
No matter how good, bad or indifferent you are, the fitter can only see your swing on that day.

When I got fitted for Pings a few years back I must have had a completely diferent swing to normal as I couldn't hit the clubs when they arrived. A later fitting at Mizuno saw me hitting better than ever..

And you might have clubs made to your exact specification - put a shonky swing on it and the ball's still going sideways....

No probs with what he's using. Pretty sensible in fct. I've seen Pros using Cally X16s which aren't exactly blades! Guys on WRX might not believe it

The 1st Ping fitting would (well, should) have involved performing a Ping (static) fit - checking wrist to floor against height and a few other measurements- and come up with the correct Ping specs (which colour dot). Off the rack Pings with the same colour Dot will be same spec - perhaps other than grip size. so Fit is 'already done'. Ping fit is free.

So a scratch player got a bad fitting. That may have been due to his own input to the fitting, or the fitter. Or maybe it was a good fitting but the guy just wanted Pings instead. Who know. Or cares.

The idea that a fitting is bad but a random selection of clubs is better is absurd, and hardly worth the pixels it has already consumed. If your mate prefers to buy his clubs by walking into a shop, throwing a Pro V1 and taking whatever it hits, good luck to him. His choice says nothing about the merits or otherwise of fitting, just a lot about him.

Seems a little bit off-hand Ethan! Not had your caffeine fix for the morning yet? :D

The Ping fitting means any selection won't be 'random'.

I agree that there any number of variables that could have meant the fitting was less than satisfactory.

But I think the number of entries in the answer to 'Who cares?' would be at least 2!

While I believe 'fitting works', I wouldn't suggest that 'every fitting works'.
