Ever played with ppl you never met?

My dad can't play this weekend and mates r working. Tempted to ring up club see if there a comp and if I can join in someone's group. Trouble is I don't know anyone and not sure how they would be about it. I'm not the best player but I can get round happily enough and might not know all the rules but enough to not get penalised haha
Anyway have you ever done it and how was you received or have you had someone join you before

Done it plenty of times and you should definitely do it.

You may well get some great lads or ladies to go around with and make some friends for next time your usual gang arent around.

Had it on holiday in Florida, got teamed up with a couple from Birmingham, real nice people and enjoyed my round, go for it, at least you'll know more people after your round.

Yep, do it frequently.

I don't have a regular 4ball, so just rock up and go out with anyone, and no-one's complained (to the best of my knowledge). After 6 years, I know a lot of people at the club, so it's less of an issue, but in the early days, I had no problem phoning up and getting put into a 2 or 3ball. Maybe ask the proshop to put you with people who won't mind?

When I go abroad, I'm almost always playing golf by myself and have only ever had a problem once, where a 2ball didn't want me joining them.

I quite like meeting new folk, and when abroad, you know you never have to see them again if they're dull!

Done it a few times mate, bit wary the first time I did it as worried that my golf would be crap. It was crap but the lads did not mind and have since become good mates to play rounds with.

definately do it. I've met some really nice people in all age groups. You get the odd pain who would rather you weren't in their 4 ball but the rest are fine.

It's one of the best parts of the game IMHO.

Do it more often and it will help you settle when playing comps in the future. A couple of weeks back due to a stag weekend I was drafted in to my clubs winter league team, all off scratch. I played with one of the clubs scratch legends and team manager. Never played with him before, never seen the opposition before either. We beat the top of the table team 5 matches to 0 and we won our game 5 n 4 while one under par. I’m now in the pool and all because I have no hang ups with playing with or against strangers. Even if you play rubbish it will stand you in good stead. Just play your own game and don’t worry if they might not like the situation either.

The bottom line, I play with lots of guys who i never knew before because of this.

Yes do it. Best way to get to know others in the club. Sometimes if I want to play really early in the morning I have to do this. We use an online timesheet which is the way forward not this constant ringing up the pro shop to some fed-up assistant taking phone calls all day and you can pick and choose your times, avoiding anyone known to be the slowest player in the club!

One day you might play in a forum meet. There will be no one there who knows any body. It's hilarious. People wandering about brandishing GM like an identity badge. No one has a clue about any one.

Do it, it's fun. You might meet a new life long friend. Or smiffy.

Does your club not hold roll ups (swindles, greedies or myriad of other pseudonyms) when there is no comps on. There are at least three at my place on a Saturday at different times and all welcome new faces (one slightly less warmly it must be said but they are the ones that go off early, play slow and cause issues for those folowing so no real loss there) and its a great way to meet new players. OK you'll be nervouse to start but usually its more about the laugh and a drink after and its usually a couple of quid in the kitty anyway so never going to break the bank

Not sure not played any comps since joining in August. Used to play at old club but haven't here as old man doesn't have a handicap yet... Will try pop in tomorrow to see them reckon I will be nervous first hole then settle down by 3rd after a natter

I do it every week, at first it was really daunting as I'm not the best but have met some really top people and picked up some helpful advise!! Last week I was worried as was paired up with an 11 and 14 hcp players, explained I'm not great and was met with replies of don't worry we are all here to have fun etc try we're top notch and had lots of great chats etc on the way round with a few pointers etc. one even told me to have ago with his driver! Plus I know alot more members than most people who have been there for ages, always nice to have people acknowledge you on the way round etc.

Com'on mate, golf is a social game, just pitch up and play, if somebody thinks there too good to play with you its their loss. As has been said you might meet some nice people who you can play with again. The other 3 in my regular fourball were all met this way. We generally try to get several groups to mix up by putting the balls in a hat, I find I concentrate better when playing strangers.

I don't have a regular group that I play with and for weekend comps I always add my name in any space to fill up a tee time. Its the best way to get to know people and if you play well it doesn't take long for your name to get round the clubhouse and people talking about you.
