Ernie for The Open

After reading open previews and looking at his record plus his decent US open performance, I was thinking same thing did a quick search on odds and found 40/1 quoted at coral, did get any further and now it's 28/1 still a good shout me thinks.

I think it's getting hard to pick the major winners, any of 15-20 players have very realistic chances if they click for those 4 days. Certainly Els is amongst that group

He has as good a chance as many. I think it is becoming harder and harder to pick the winner of any major as there are so many good players out there now playing well on a regular basis and there is always a surprise package. I'm tempted to have an e/w on my mate Brett Rumford for a top five

Interesting to see some of the guys who featured in the closing stages of the 2002 Muirfield Open play off hitting form.

Anyone able to name the play off players without using a search engine?

Yeah but i'd be cheating too as after reading open preview and big easy interview it's all refreshed in memory! :)

Just looked it up.

It's a good question! I had completely forgotton. Just shows there's some truth in the old adage about no one remembering who came second.

I agree that Els is looking good and must have a great chance but there are so many good payers playing well at the moment it is a tough one to call. We have had some weird weather this year and I have a feeling that could be a big factor in determining the outcome. If the rough is thick and the wind blows it could be anyone's.

i was reading something last week about the open, i think it was this months GM piece by Bill (which was excellent! ;) ). I think he has it spot on, the winner wont be a surprise, it will be from the top 15 golfers, (i know that sounds obvious!) the course is not going to be a birdie fest, it "should" be set up for a player like Lee Westwood to win with his driving and approach accuracy, however i dont think he will. I wouldn't write off Justin Rose to get the double personally... Els for top ten easy, i think he will let him self down with poor putting, i saw him miss some howlers over the weekend...

I have to agree with you on your Rose pick, his confidence is way high at the moment and as we know he can knock it about a links course.
