The R&A has announced that The 155th Open will be played at St Andrews from 11-18 July 2027.

British can refer to a few things, including: the UK, Great Britain, the British Isles, Great Britain and Ireland.
So no, they wouldn't.

Ok, so you go to a pub near Portmarnock and tell all the locals they are British, let's see how that works out for you.

As far as I'm aware the R&A is the governing body for all golf outside USA and Mexico so I don't see why the Open couldn't be played anywhere it is tradition that is in UK but has basically gradually extended from Prestwick to the East coast of Scotland then down to England etc.

I didn't think it should have been in northern island to start with. If it can be there I have no problem with it being in the south.
France or Holland would be too far.

They already have rerouted Porthcawl when they hosted the British Seniors a few times. The 18th becomes the 1st and the 17th becomes the 18th. I assume they will do the same for the Ladies Open this year.

OK this would make sense, because the practice ground is near the 17th green and they could put all the hospitality there. I still think they would need to move the green to create more space for spectators, also need space for a grandstand around the 18th tee (which would play as the 1st in Open routing).
You couldn't build grandstands around the normal 18th fairway and green, it would block off the tee shot on the 1st. Also the land drops off to rocks and the sea directly behind the 18th green so no room for grandstands (and it would block the most photogenic view on the course).

The early holes that hug the coast would be tricky to manage spectator flow, but they manage this at St Andrews and other Open venues.

Most of the course is surrounded by farmers fields which the R&A could probably rent for the Open. This is pretty common at most events I've been to.

I've said it here before but as an Irish person I'm really not enthusiastic about the possibility of the Open being played here. For whatever reason it doesn't feel right to me that it should be outside of England & Scotland. Even having it in Portrush doesn't feel ok

As an Englishman I feel the same
