So Elliot Saltman opens his heart to the SUN. What he admits to is a mistake, not a deliberate act of dishonesty. So is he that thick after all these years a junior then coming up through the ranks to gain his tour card as a pro that making a mistake, allegedly a few times, is a sufficient answer.

He doesn’t say what mistake, how many times he done it, how he done it or that he was oblivious, or did not know the rule that led to that mistake.

Now that he’s said this it makes me wonder, how someone who’s hit thousands of balls, played hundreds of rounds with a family of pro golfers, and yet he doesn’t know how to do the most basic of rules without making a mistake.

You are right Tommo, plus raking it up again, he isn't doing himself any favours. People with any interest in golf will have made their minds up already.

Re: Elliot Salman "it was a mistake"

The only mistake that he made was not accepting he cheated, paying the penalty and getting on with it afterwards

Re: Elliot Salman "it was a mistake"

A guy I know who used to play on the tour said that he's been known as a cheat on the circuit for ages, all through the junior ranks and everything, and that when he finally got called up on it, nobody was surprised and everyone was kind of glad something had finally been done about it....

Obviously take that with a pinch of salt (no pun intended) as it all could just be rumours and that, but kind of fitted in with the rest of the story considering that he didn't really dispute the ban and didn't seem to get any support from his fellow pros...

Think I must have been hibernating, what's all this about?

Re: Elliot Salman "it was a mistake"

Its a mistake. First on the list of excuses used by politicians, along with the variation (which doesn't work so well in golf) - it was an error of judgement.

What's next - its an illness and I'm going to rehab?

I would like to associate myself with the group who have made their minds up already on this .... gentleman's actions.

Re: Elliot Salman "it was a mistake"

"He was accused by his two playing partners, English duo Stuart Davis and Marcus Higley, of replacing his ball incorrectly on the greens at least five times in one round during the event in Moscow."

- What does this really mean? Is it essentially placing a marker liberally and then replacing your ball liberally in a way which leaves you an easier putt?

Putting the marker down at the ball one way but then replacing the ball a different way to move it closer.

Re: Elliot Salman "it was a mistake"

Unless he has a marker with a 2 foot radius, can't see what advantage would be gained here.

At most the ball would be moved say, an inch??? At best.

Very stupid thing to do.

All true.

There have been well recorded incidents of people allegedly moving their marker more than an inch or two, including a player who now has the nickname Mark It Nearer, but even an inch or two can make a psychological difference (ooh, err, missus).
