Some thoughts on those I've played:

baberton

Nice parkland course. I was there earlier in the year and they were having major work done building a new clubhouse and remodelling parts of the course to accomodate it. One of the holes was temporarily split into two (with a temporary green). Not sure the current state of play but a good course.

broomieknowe

Another parkland course - not one of my favourites; maybe because I seem to play badly there. Well presented though.

dalmahoy

Resort championship course. Long, a bit dull and wet in places (mind you where isn't at the moment).

lothianburn

Built on the side of the pentland hills - next to the ski centre. Excellent greens here although a few strange holes. One for the fitter golfer - it can be hard work on the hills.

prestonfield

Fairly central Edinburgh course, overlooked by Arthur's seat. I enjoyed it although some others consider it a bit boring. Suffered badly with the wet weather but seemed to be recovering nicely when I was there a couple of weeks back.

ravelston

Interesting 9 hole course. Quite short, small greens - many of which are a bit elevated. Not many easy chips when you narrowly miss the greens here.

turnhouse

Never played it but, coincidentally, I'm due there tomorrow!

Blairgowrie is in Perthshire and nowhere near Edinburgh.
Hawick is in the Borders and nowhere near Edinburgh.

Forum Mod. DCB is probably the man you need to talk to. He's an expert in golf in the land of salt 'n sauce.

Avoid Dalmahoy is my advice!!

I'd suggest that you get a bit of shag pile, cover it in tar and sticky toffee sauce, then add some treacle and you'll get an idea of how slow the Dalmahoy greens are!

As others have said, Dalmahoy best avoided, not in great shape at the moment.

Baberton is having a new clubhouse built and there have been some diruptions but it is a lovely course and well worth playing.

Turnhouse is a nice course but constant aircraft traffic to adjacent airport can be a bit of a distraction at times.

The Musselburgh (Monktonhall GC) well worth playing, nice parkland course, good mix of holes well worth playing.

Ravelston is a wee 9 holer and can get a bit wet underfoot at times.

The rest, well, some have had a bad summer ith the weather, others just don't so it for me ;)

An option in Edinburgh that has a good test of golf is the municipal course at The Braids, not long by modern standards but a good teest of golf with great views of the city.

I thought I had replied to this but must have hit the wrong key.

Wayman, I would be delighted to host you at Baberton if I am at home when your trip takes place. I think it is a fine course and it is good to hear other opinions the same. The update on the work going on is that the new clubhouse is well on its way along with the course changes. Currently, the course is a bit shortened and we are in portakabin type accommodation. Some disruption then, but still a full and enjoyable 18 holes to play. All should be in place for next season - shiny new clubhouse overlooking the course (which the previous one didn't) and a new course layout with no loss of length from the previous one.

Of the other courses you mention and that I know, I would endorse West Linton , agree that Dalmahoy is not a great prospect, advise against Lothianburn unless you want loads of practice with uphill, downhill, feet above ball, feet below ball shots and pack a climbing rope. and confirm Kingsnowe is an interesting course and worth a game. Mortonhall is not mentioned but is a fine course - long and challenging and with great views. Kilspindie is worth considering. I haven't played the others and have never heard of a club called Thanks in advance.
