Dundonald links- back to black Open

Im guessing winter tee's and greens in winter condition, who judges a course under those conditions anyway;)

It was full greens and tees. Probably playing myself didn't help and that the place was dead ( a Monday in January etc). I am sure I will play it again in a fourball and enjoy it more. It didn't blow me away. I played steady golf and shot 2 over net par.

No apologies to the golfing purists. I paid my money and posted an opinion.

You certainly did, I'm curious as you are the only person I've ever seen (other than FD but thats another story due to tees) that has commented like that.

There are a few people who would put Western Gailes above everything in Ayrshire other than the Ailsa, I can't comment having never played the Ailsa, Royal Troon or Prestwick. All that it really lacks to make it a top top course is a practice facility, in my opinion of course.

I haven't played Troon, however I would put Western behind both Ailsa and Prestwick.

Indeed, I enjoyed dundonald much more than WG but you know the reason for that. WG looked pretty decent as long as you don't play it off the forward tees. The ailsa is in a different league but WG probably better than prestwick, again forward tees excepted!

FD - Do you have to play the Reds or do you have an option to play off the Yellows?

I could have played off any tees. The jokers at Dundonald persuaded me to play off the whites, but the starter at WG reckoned there were too many long carries off the yellows and advised me to play from their forward tees. As it happened, I'd have struggled from the whites at WG but I don't think there would have been any issues from the yellows.

I'd like to play both courses again, off the yellows next time!

When I play a friendly game at a new course nowadays I have a long think about which tees to use - some of the holes at WG are completely ruined from where I played.

At least they gave you the choice, I thought it may not have been an option.

Our place has a set of green tee's which are used/designed for female pro's in pro ams(allegedly). They seem to be on the holes which have a different par for male/female. I believe they are setup 10% closer than the whites to make it fair between male and female pro's.

There is nothing on the score card to reflect this, but apprently that's why they are out

IIRC the starter tried to persuade the guys to play from the yellows (without success) but I stupidly went with his recommendation.

A few courses have women's championship tees - the Kings at Gleneagles is great for this and hugely increased my enjoyment of the course. Meant I could play it at a sensible length for my ability but also at an appropriate par/SSS. I'm of the opinion that all top courses, who charge a premium on their green fees, should have this option.

our place you can play off what ever tee's you like, except the blue which they save for 3 comps and the scratch and county champs, though i heard this year, there may be an option for low handicaps to have that option.
When we had the Curtis cup 2 years ago they played a mixture of red, white and yellow...

TBH, I've never turned up at any course to be told that I couldn't play off whichever tees I wanted out of those in play on the day.
