Driving distances and handicap- be honest now!

Example, you play an away match and on a tee your opponent tells you it's x yards to carry a ditch across the fairway.
How do you decide whether or not to go for it?

I'd ask how wide the ditch was

Swinger is surprisingly supple judging by his party piece.
Pieman is silky smooth, but sometimes struggles to make the carry over heather.
Madadey is a bit of a powder puff, as I managed to out drive him at least there times at Woodhall Spa. (He was about 6 up at the time though.)

I have never seen any amateur drive as long as Swinger, although he is probably past his peak now.

Never measured, got a GPS watch recently so will get round to measuring a few.
I'm not long by proper big hitter standards, but longer than 90+% of the people I have played with. IME most club golfers are very short and my distance, such as it is, is commented on by most new people I play with.

The assistant pro at Filton is the biggest hitter I've seen and he puts his 5 wood out there past my driver - I've seen him carry 320 with his driver, gps measured, we found the pitch mark on the front apron of a par 4 green that was measuring 331 to the middle, the ball was through the green nestled snugly against the car park fence, total distance of 340+ stopped by the fence. It's ridiculous to see - THAT is a proper big hitter. For my part I took a 4i a 9i and 2 putted for a par net birdie and the match (after he gave me 18 shots and he didn't make a putt all day)

For me I would guesstimate 250-260 yards carry plus whatever roll. Some further, some not as far but for an "average decent hit" average thats probably about right.
I'm 5'10 and pretty strong (used to lift a lot of weights).

id guess that there's a number of people who are being a touch conservative just to avoid the usual abuse!

there is no one putting it to 300 yards at our place. 280 is where all the low men are maxing out! they are no big guys either. great technique. as mentioned before, quite athletic but not massive.

one guy i play with is off 18 and can hit 280 or so. he is a big guy. he plays gaelic. he is not consistant though. very likely to hit a bih hook!

4 h/cap, dont measure drives so dont know, just interested in distance left for the next shot ( the scoring shot). Short by forum standards but in reality probably better than average.
