Driving distances and handicap- be honest now!

7 / average "carry" bout 240/250 ish id say , full distance depends on time of year

I think carry depends on time of year as well. I know I'm about a club shorter with my irons this time of year so I guess it must affect my driver at least as much, probably more.

Thanks again everyone! I think I'll using any further results.

A couple more questions coming up over the next few hours, including one starting in 3 minutes re: bag value.

@SB - just tried this using Google Earth and the first hole I did it on using where I drove to on Saturday which is where I usually hit it (bearing in mind my average drive length guess was 260yds) I got a ground length of 260.42 yds - honest - no fiddling to make it so. How utterly BIZARRE!!!!

Was that uphill at the first or downhill at the 12th ?

10/220ish. I very rarely hit a good drive so my average is low, but just longer than Smiffy.:whoo:

As in the air quality ? i know when its realy cold there can be a difference alright , & as you say its more obvious in the irons

im a little sceptical when people post there average distances unless i have seen them play,

There's 2 types of sceptics.... the duffers who won't believe you could possibly out hit them, the good players who know it's possible but wonder just how wide you're hitting them if you're really capable of such distances.

Summers day out of the sweetspot I'm a 275 hitter with my fade, doesn't mean I can't hit it 300 every now and then but that's certainly not something I'm able to do every time, but I'm definitely capable of catching it a bit thin or out of the heel and ending up at only 245, 250, add in a bit of wind or soft conditions and 230 comes into the equation.... so there's a huge mix in there... we can all wave willies but not many talk about their 'cold' days

Not sure about air quality, but more a change in density because of the temperature. I think I lose ~20yds carry in winter with my driver, but it's only a guess I've never measured it.

i hope im not a duffer who does't believe anybody can out hit him :mmm:

since i joined my club about a year ago i've played with 20 or so members in club competions there's only been a scratch player who has continously out hit me, really solid swing must have been carrying 270 ish.

The remainder i was longer than, they ranged from 5 -21 handicaps, i'd say my 240- 260 is averge on this post and like you said i don't like getting out my willie on a cold day and i play on a links, more role..

driving is my favorite part of the game

saying all that id rather have a game with somebody on here before claiming i hit it 240-260

Can I be a third type. I'm sceptical because a lot of people say I have 100yds to the green on this 380yd hole so I must have driven it 280yds. :)

I've only played with one person who's posted on this thread and they've been a little conservative imo.

I do look forward to playing with people who say they hit it a long way on here. If they don't I can feel smug, if they do it's great to watch. Win win.

Good for you.

(Am I missing something?)

Well only that (whether you believe me or not) I actually didn't know whether or not I regularly hit the ball 240yds off the tee or 280yds so I don't really think about it too much - I think about how far I have to go (I'm not really interested in folk who big up about how far they hit the ball blah, blah, blah).

I guessed I didn't hit it 280 - I hoped I hit it 240 so I spilt the difference. And oddly the difference is about how far I hit it. And confirmed with another few holes. Now I know. Not sure it makes a lot of difference to me though :)

Before you measured on GE, did you have a distance in your head that you'd be happy trying to take on on the course.

Example, you play an away match and on a tee your opponent tells you it's x yards to carry a particular bunker, or ditch across the fairway.
How do you decide whether or not to go for it?

Since Driving distance is part of the subject of the OP - and apropos very little at all.

From Guinness Book of Records 1958.

Golf - Longest Drive

'In long-driving contests 290 yards is rarely surpassed'

Changed days indeed

10 hcap, this time of year 250-260yd carry, summer probably another 20 yds carry.

I use our par 4 12th hole as a benchmark, it measures 264yds and I carry it in Winter and overshoot it in Summer with the driver. Its a routine birdie hole for me as its drivable.

Carry + run is a useless metric because its varies enormously depending on ground conditions and slope.

I'm on a 100% winning record betting with people that average "300yards" (normally it's the mid-teen handicappers) and that normally play their 2nd shots before I hit mine!

I probably wouldn't challenge somebody that said they averaged 260 off 15!

Put into context a 300yard average last year would put you in the top20 on the PGATour!

Not 100% sure, I would say about 260 give or take. HC 6.

I regularly play a par 3 of 235yards uphill and I hit a 3w to it. I know my driver would be 20/30 yards further and too long and sliced miles right ;-)
