I went into American Golf today and tried a few new drivers against my existing Taylor Made R1. None of them hit it any further, with my best drives being just over 200 yards. My swing speed is down to a rather pathetic 77 mph (used to be 95 - 100 when I was younger), so I must be getting old. The latest Taylor Made M1 gave a slightly higher launch and a bit more carry through the air, but less roll on landing, so still no gain in length! I don't think I will laying out 400 notes just yet! Happy Xmas! :)

How much further do you hit your driver than your 3 wood?

At that swing speed I'd have though the more loft the better, but happy to be told otherwise.

I hit my driver about 10 yards further than my 3 wood. All the drivers I tried were set to 11.5 or 12 degrees loft. Interestingly I have managed to keep my handicap about the same over the years, despite the loss of distance! I guess this is because my miss-hits go less far into trouble. :)

Interesting that there was no significant differences. What models apart from the M1 did you try?

I've tried loads of drivers and not 1 of them comes close to my trusty taylormade R9. Tried the M1, R15, Aeroburner, covert 2.0, fly z, big Bertha and benross rip speed, infact the closest one figure wise was the benross

The one I was most interested in was the Cobra Fly Z, because one of my friends has one and hits it really well, and I can almost afford to buy one in their sale. However it performed almost exactly the same as my existing TM R1. :(

I'm getting very cynical about this now. I think the development of drivers has now reached the point where any gains from new models are miniscule. The COR is now limited, head size is limited & manufacturer's have the lightest materials available to make the club's from. What is, I believe, much more important, is to find your own optimum launch angle & find a driver which gives you this with the minimum of spin. I had a long journey to discover this, always hitting it too high with too much spin. By trial & error & searching the Internet I discovered the Black Tie shaft, one of only two I've found which will control my spin & launch angle. The other I found, courtesy of Hacker Khan, from an analysis of club C of G locations http://www.mygolfspy.com/the-most-popular-drivers-of-2015-secret-cg-locations/ is the Nike Covert / Kuro Kage combination which I hit almost exactly the same shape & distance as the SLDR /Black Tie.

I won't be changing drivers any time soon. Unless I talk myself into an M1!

Interesting. The only thing I've found that suits me and actually gives me any noticeable change in distance is the Titleist 915 D2 but even then with driving accuracy for 2015 at 44% it's clearly not the club but me and I need to find a way to hit more fairways next year and a new driver wouldn't seem to be the answer

The only noticeable difference was that the Fly Z and the M1 felt a bit lighter to swing than my R1, but then I prefer to feel a bit of weight in the head anyway. I add lead tape to my irons to achieve this.

Ive got the SLDR with a Matrix Rul shaft in it and the only one that get past it and with the same dispersion is the G30 with the standard shaft in it ,the carry distance was 11 yards further

I've had a go with a friend's G30 and it did seem to go pretty well.

i have a SLDR, it has the Matrix red tie shaft ,seems to work pretty good for me ,but when it go`s wrong ,boy does it go wrong ,i get a huge hook and its all my fault as im the bloke swinging it.
