There was about 3 inches of clean snow on the other lanes when a total idiot flys past at about 70 mph.

That is why police issue these warnings.

That was Friday morning for me! i was driving down a dual carriage way hill, in the slow lane, in a Volvo XC90 4x4. some idiot in a mondeo overtaking me!! the slow lane literally has 2 cleanish tracks and the outside lane was fully snow covered!! almost wanted him to crash, just so i could LOL in his face for being such an idiot! Some people have no concept of how long it takes to stop in snow/icy conditions!

I think of it like the Darwin awards, some people are sensible and born survivors. others are idiots and will lead a short life.

Last winter a guy in a white van went bleezing past on a snow covered single carraigeway road that was white with the blizzard,the rest of the cars were rightly dong around 30mph.

As he went past I thought to myself he was going to struggle to get into the line of cars before the sharp left hander 500 yards in front and for a split second I too actually thought "crash ya idiot".........................he tried to pull in and put the anchors on at the same time,did a couple of 360's and went through the hedge!!

I did stop to laugh,sorry see if he was okay and he was fine.

I did feel bad for my wish coming true but only for a split second.:smirk:

Thawing out much quicker than I expected it to... 'Cos I was bored when I got here I shovelled clear all the snow in the car park... Seeing how much its thawed since I need not of bothered ...

I get people following too close behind me when I'm out on lessons, driving at 30 (in a 30 limit before anyone says) and they're virtually inspecting the contents of my boot.
No lessons today but I had to go out to run some errands and on the way home - at -2c, with two black lines about a 2 ft wide and then snow - I'm doing 25, a line of cars close up behind and those in front disappearing into the distance doing at least 35....
As I turned off, the road widens to 2 lanes - they all powered into it to get past me, the first one began sliding and the rest piled straight into each other - just as I'm disappearing into the distance doing 25......and they weren't young drivers either!

Many times I see people driving about 2 car lengths away from the car in front, doing 30+.
They have no chance of stopping and they don't change their driving style to take into account conditions.

Been amazed at the number of cars driving around in poor visibility without their lights on. We've had lots of snow showers and sleet falling today but they carry on as if it is a clear summers day and are visible to all other road users.

Can't see any reason why we don't have driving lights that come on automatically regardless of time of day or year. Surely anything that makes you more visible to other drivers (without being distracting - aka fog lamps left on when no fog) you should do. Beautiful sunny summers day = deep shadows - so put your headlights on dipped beam to be seen when you are in a shadow.

Since Feb'11 all newly designed cars have to have DayLight Running Lights incorporated into the design. As most cars are either New designs or facelifts every 2 years or so it means that by the Summer almost all new cars will have them.
And as cars seem to last a lot less time than they used to, give it 10 years and the majority of cars will have DRL.....

A mile down the road he turns into my single track road having been flashed a couple of times by oncoming traffic. Another mile down the road he decides he should put his lights on.

We all got sent home about 10.00am on Friday. Trains were already struggling and several ladies commute from Oxford and beyond. SWT and my service to Bracknell was in danger of going. In the end HID came and picke me up and the A329 was becoming difficult. The outside lane was snowed up and everyone was in the inside lane. Visibility was poor and I think an hour later when it really came down it would have been a lottery.

Sometimes employees and employers have to make a judgemental call. HID only lives four miles from work and yet they decided the roads were unsafe and told their staff to log on and work from home having ensured they had taken work home the night before as a precaution.

Having driven to the Alps a number of times I have a couple of sets of snow chains for the various vehicles we have used. Usually pop them in the boot when we have snow and I've helped out a couple of people in problems. I'd be pretty confident of venturing out except concern for the "others" causing problems as have been alluded to on this thread!
Popped int LIDL at the weekend and noticed they were doing snow chains for £20, sure they would not be top quality but for once in a while who cares at that price. If more people had them (or snow socks) then we'd probably have less problems.

Certainly snow chains are a better idea in this country than winter tyres that we would only use for a short period in the winter. This winter we had two weeks early in December and this last few week.

Daytime running lights have been on Volvos for years and save you from ever forgetting to switch them on. You just get flashed a lot.

That is my pet hate light not even on and snow or ice all over vehicles, the 1st thing I do, which adds all of 5 mins on to my days prep is to clear ALL the snow from the whole vehicle (even a 4 x 4).

There have been so many accident caused by the snow flying off one vehicle and slapping into the windscreen of the ones behind, or even sliding down the roof onto their own screen.

It is unreal how many idiots are out there, I leave @ 6:30 am, and still see idiots with no light on in the pitch black. They deserve to right themselves off. Just sad that is usually others that suffer due to their negligence. It should be an offence not to clear vehicle prior to departure or incorrect use of lights.

The rubber on normal tyres becomes less effective and pliable in temperatures as warm as 7 Celcius, the rubber compound of winter tryes is designed to stay pliable and maintain a higher level of grip and dispersion of water/slush in temperatures under this. How many months of the year have constant plus 7 temps.

They are also sensible in that tyres usually lasts about 2 years before losing a good percentage of braking effectiveness and grip, by rotating your summer tyres with winter ones you generally get 4 years a set, and most places will store your summer tyres till you swap them back.
