Having just read some of the comments on Homer's latest post got me thinking.......

Do you set targets (around your golf game)for yourself? If so are they for the season, say drop handicap by 3 shots, or increase yardage on the drives, drop the average number of putts you take? Or set targets for each round, say no trple bogeys today, or don't hit the ditch on a certain hole.

Do targets raise tension or ar they needed to push our games forward?

I set targets for most things in my life, it can be anything depending on the scenario.

Eg get xxxx amount of work done.
Clean car by 6pm so I can get to play a few holes.
Break deadlines.
Enusre todays product is better than last weeks.
Get 3 pars with no oob's
Par the par 3's
Hit 9 fairways.
Get 5 GIR's.
break 80,85,90,95 and 100 if it going pear shape.
Get within 4 foot with my chips
Get within 4 foot with long puts
Hole every putt.

So yes I do set targets - my problem is I change them depending on the day - really I should set my targets then I have to play better!!!

I tend to set goals for the season as I'm too inconsistant to achieve anything round by round. I wanted to get to 10 but just missed out but improved my putting, GIR and sand save stats and have got a better short game this season.

I won a medal and got a few 2nd and 3rd place finishes so can't be too disappointed. I posted some good scores for nine holes (front and back) and also had some real nightmare holes too especially when it mattered.

I have some goals for the winter regarding my swing and the tempo in particular so it'll be interesting to see how that goes. I'm going to be using metronomes apparently so that should be novel!

Yes, based on a thread someone did at the start of the year I set three this year: long term, mid term & short term.

However, I've only managed 1 of them.

Yes
They were for this year get to single figures down to 9.5 so almost there,
Shoot 36 points in a open singles on a new course acheived that,
Win a medal 3 left to go so still hope there and win one of the club matchplays got beat in the semi there so going ok for the year.

if I did I can't remember what they were, and not about to go looking. probably didn't set defined targets, I get enough of that at work, more hopes.

I would have hoped to get cut, and I've done that. We can still get cut over the winter I think.

I would have hoped to play more consistently, and despite a few hiccoughs, I've been doing that.

I've won a couple of trophies and a medal, and I wouldn't have expected that.

I think I also hoped to buy less kit, not sure how that one's going!

Homer, have you tried the idea from Zen Golf?

If you've not read it, he suggests walking to the ball in slow motion, which should set the 'tone' for your swing and the tempo will naturally be slower.

I'm just curious to see if it works.

Got to be worth a try with a few shots on your next visit to the range, especially since it doesn't require any change to your swing.

I'd just love to know if it works. :D

I've just read (listened to) Zen Golf, and while I don't necessarily agree (or don't want to go to such lengths) with all of it, there is some good stuff there.

1. Get down to single figures - good bit away now but the way i'm swinging I could get there!
2. Win club matchplay - lost quarter final
3. win a medal - haven't won any, one or two medals left

Looks like i'm struggling! :p

I did set targets but circumstances dictated that they were going to be very difficult to achieve.
1. Havn't made single figures yet - maybe 2 chances left this year
2. Havn't won anything because I've barely played anything.
3. Can't remember the 3rd one but I bet I havn't made it..

I'll set some for next year.

I get enough of that at work

LOL, me too. I get to set all my team's targets, plus mine, but I still set myself some golf ones.

Cat 2 - still one good round away from that one.
Better course management - still struggle when testosterone gets the better of me.
Win my Saturday group's order of merit - currently second bottom - pants

I can't think I've played for the last two years with any h'cap in mind, just to get better and maybe/perhaps, get to the standard I played at many years ago.

I seem to set myself mini-targets with my swing itself...I know what I'm doing when things are not good, so I look to work on that between games. If I hit it straighter and sweeter (which means further too :)) than last time out, I'm happy.

I'm happy full stop really a.t.m. I don't play to get cut, I play to enjoy it. I enjoy it when I'm playing steady and making pars and birdies when the opportunity arises.

This season, I simply wanted to play more golf than I managed last season. I felt that my game was stagnating and that it would improve by playing more. I have played more, I've played better and enjoyed it more.

I have a long term goal - to get down to a 12 hcp. For some reason (nothing too logical) I feel that this is my real potential if I play regularly. I haven't set a time limit - but I'll treat myself to something if I make it.
